Note: the ‘past’ of this is set into the years of Gokusen 2, but the ‘present’ is around 3 years after the movie. And as there’s only one Japanese phrase in it, I’m translating now. When Ryu says “kudaranai senko da, ore.”, it’s “I’m a good for nothing teacher”.
Fights.
Quarrels.
Punching until fainting.
3-D’s, Hikaru’s, Kosuke’s, Keita’s, Ryu’s and Hayato\s lives had been full of it. So much that it had actually tired the hell out of them, resulting in the rest of the class giving up on it little by little too. It had not only been their promise with Yankumi; they’d starting seeing their fights meaningless and tried to avoid them as much as possible, suppressing their anger and irritation when they knew it’d end up there. In the end, they’d even safely graduated, they\d gone to University and properly found jobs; Ryu had even become a teacher himself. They’d never really talked, no one had really tried to keep the bonds after a few years’ time, or so it seemed.
The truth was that Hayato and Ryu had kept in contact; not just that but had even developed another kind of relationship after a certain night. Ryu, having just graduated and coming back form his first job interview had witnessed a fight, and one of the guys in it seemed relatively familiar, he’d guessed, and later realized it had been Hayato. He just stood and watched, unable to talk, until it had all been over; this time, Hayato had been the one beaten. He ‘d walked up close to him and asked if he was alright, and the older male had smiled, saying it’d been only a bunch of junior high delinquents, it had not been a big deal, and besides, it was good for gathering reference. Then he had realized it had been Ryu, he had stood up and given him a tight hug, murmuring how he’d missed him like hell and asking what he was up to.
They had spent the night talking and drinking, and Ryu had eventually kissed him. That little thing had gradually grown, and they’d rented an apartment in which they were living together now. They hadn’t told any of their friends; not only because the connection had gotten lost, because Ryu had been too afraid of their reaction, because Hayato was worrying about them feeling left out if they learned he and Ryu were still so close and even more together…They didn’t really make up reasons and excuses, there was no need for them. The fact that they were happy together didn’t change no matter how guilty they felt.
Hayato had not gone to University, but he’d evolved to an author. He was pretty successful; he wrote about high school delinquency cases and how important duals for dominance between two schools or even two students of the same school were, he explained how these cases could be solved or properly ignored without causing further trouble, where all that anger and masked hatred came from; his works were read not only by parents but had even been used as reference in extra curriculum classes at some schools. He always wrote giving his characters feelings from his own point of view, having been one himself, built his stories on his own experiences and asked Ryu of his own thoughts and opinions on most of anything new he started. Them living together had started making its appearance in his drafts; he wanted to write a story about two males in love, but nothing that would follow the concept of romance every BL story had until the moment.
They’d decided to keep no secrets from eachother and shared everything. This time though, when it came to this story he wanted to start, Hayato still hadn’t talked to Ryu about it. He didn’t intend to hide it forever; he wanted to have his usual plan of it down when the tie came though. He always talked with Ryu before presenting anything to his editor. Ryu, even if anyone would just assume that he’d find everything perfect, was in reality a pretty fair judge; looking at everything objectively, just to give the image of any random person who’d face whatever the next story would be.
Ryu, on his side, had never asked Hayato’s help in his work; he was just being the same since he was a student, and Hayato knew it and accepted it. Ryu was trying to become a teacher like Yankumi, but he wouldn’t admit it even to himself. Just because he still had a long way towards being like her though it didn’t man that his efforts had gone unnoticed; there were already students whose trust he was gaining little by little, some others that admired him, and recently that he’d been hired from a private junior high school full of rich kids and troubles, there were some students that came to him for advice, even if dragged only by his own “bocchan” past.
That day he’d gotten word that his contract with the school was renewed and they wanted him to be a regular and not a temporary employee, which meant only one thing; he’d finally been able to get steady. Coming back home from school that night he went out of his way and bought a huge bottle of sake, wanting to celebrate with Hayato.
The lights were not on when he entered their apartment though.
“Hayato?” he called out, switching them on. He took off his shoes and locked the door behind him, and leaving his bad and the sake bottle in the kitchen, he walked to their bedroom, calling out for him again.
When he entered though, his voice disappeared. Hayato was lying on their bed, face down, headphones on, his hand still holding a pen between his fingers, asleep over a few papers, his handwriting clearly made out on them even from where Ryu stood. Slowly, silently, he walked closer and started picking up the papers, initially intending to just put them on his desk, but then his eyes fell on the words written on them.
Undoubtedly, it was a new story. Why didn’t he know about it though? He decided to read a few lines, and when he did, he understood. This new story had nothing to do with anything Hayato had written so far, only the fact that it was taking place in school and between students. The plot was way different, even if his style seemed altered, but truth to be told, it flowed so much more better. Before he knew it, Ryu has read all the notes and was impatient to read more, but then came back to reality. He’d read Hayato’s raw notes of a story he wasn’t sure what to do with, from what he’d seen written sideways on the papers, a story that he really wanted to write but was still not ready to talk to him about it. He knew it would affect Hayato if he knew Ryu had read it before him even mentioned anything about it, so the only thing he could do was pretend he hadn’t seen anything. He quickly placed the small pile of papers on their bedside table and changed into his own sleepwear, and after retrieving the headphones and the pen from Hayato, he turned the lights off. Bending over him, his knees pressing hard against the mattress, he laid a kiss on Hayato’s temple, under those incredibly charming beauty spots of his, and stayed looking at him, as if he glowed in the darkness.
“You’re a wonderful creature.” He whispered and covered him with their blanket. He left the room and walked back to the kitchen where he’d left his bag; he had some research for tomorrow’ lesson to do and a bunch of tests to correct.
Sitting on the floor with a glass of water and the tests in front of him at the low table in their living room made him remember of Yankumi and he wondered if she too ever felt bored to do this part of her job at home.
“…kudaranai senko da, ore…” he murmured, and gulping down he rest of the water in the glass, he finally concentrated on his work.
“Ryu?” he heard after a couple of hours.
He turned, looking over his shoulder.
“Ah, you’re awake?”
“Nn…I feel like my head has turned upside down.” Hayato said, sitting down next to him. “Work for school?”
“Some preliminary tests…It’s going to be exam period soon,”
“We’re never going to retire from this, are we?”
“Not as long as I’m a teacher, apparently. What do you know, one can actually become something they hated.”
“Judging from personal experience.” Hayato teased.
“I had the right influence.” Ryu murmured, carefully ticking the correct answers. “This is amazing.”
“Nn? What?”
“A girl in my class…She never speaks or raises her hand to answer questions, and since she hasn’t turned in any papers yet, I didn’t know what to expect. She’s VERY good, she’s brilliant.”
“Hm…I’ll just say Yankumi reincarnated and lives in my house now.”
“What the hell?”
“What?”
“She’s still alive.”
“That’s the point?”
“Hayato, I’m working. Shouldn’t you be too?”
“I fell asleep working. I’m thinking of stopping for the day..” Hayato said, laying with his head on Ryu’s legs. “How many more do you have to go through?”
“A few.”
“How many?”
“What do you want?”
“To know?”
“Go to bed.”
“Yadda. It’s still early, and I slept before.”
“10pm is never early, and I’m trying to work.”
“Just tell me how many are left!”
“Four.” Ryu sighed.
“Fine. When you’re done, we can celebrate your promotion, of some sorts.”
Ryu stopped and the pen stilled. He knew?
“How..?”
“The school called in the morning; probably at the time you were off to it, asking if you’re still home and they wanted to inform you of it before you reached etc, I didn’t quite understand, I was still half asleep. But I know.” He said, smiling down from his place on Ryu’s legs. “Congrats.”
“Whatever.” Ryu murmured, blushing. His surprise was half blown but he didn’t care; he felt his heart even warmer.
None of the two talked after that, Ryu returning to his work, having Hayato’s head in his lap, the warmth of it calming him.
When he was done and stretched back, sighing, he forgot all about Hayato laying in his lap. Coming back into reality though, he shot a look at his legs and was reminded of it. Looking at him, he smiled.
Hayato had fallen asleep again.
