That year’s Christmas break hadn’t started good at all for Hayato. He’d get called at his job every day, even though he was supposed to be off and just because he still hadn’t told his dad about what he was doing when he was out and not with his friends, they quarreled about it whenever he came back, disturbing Taku’s studying so much that he’d started spending whole days at his friends’ houses, and he’d be staying for nights too if he knew this was going to go on for long.

Hayato didn’t care what his father thought about him but he didn’t want anything of all that getting down on his brother, so he just banged into his dad’s room on December 23rd, startling him.

“What do you want?”

“Oi, oyaji…” he started, his hands in his pockets. “I have some talk to do.”

“Huh.” The older man let out, looking up from his paper.

“Us fighting is meaningless. Taku can’t study as he wants either. Just so this gets over, when I’m out of here, I’ll say it just this once and don’t ask me further about it…” he said, still wondering if he should speak such a big lie or not and if he would only be wasting his miracle if he lied about it.

“What’s all the dramatic silence about? I’m paying attention, you know.”

“I know. I…I’ve got someone I love. That’s why…When I’m not here, I’m…there. With that person.”

“Eeeh. So that’s how it is. Why didn’t you just say it form the beginning, then.” His father said, returning to his reading. It was obvious that he was sure it was nothing serious; his son had never fallen for anyone for real.

“Wait a min, this time I’m seriously saying it, could you stop with that attitude?” Hayato exclaimed, irritated for some reason. “Just this time I’m serious so…Don’t make fun of me! I really love that person…Don’t laugh at my love.”

“Ja wakatta.” The old man said. “Bring her home for Christmas.”

“It’s not a ‘she’…” Hayato let slip out, and that was enough to silence his dad. “…Oyaji?”

The older Yabuki choked and swallowed hard, and ended up coughing,

“Ah, mou, don’t die, ne?” his son let out, and as he disappeared in the kitchen to bring water, he only sat where left and thought. If the person his son loved so much wasn’t a ‘she’ but a ‘he’, was it alright? What kind of person was that ‘he’ anyway that had managed to make such a womanizer as Hayato was fall in love with him? Would he be able to accept that ‘he’, who might not even be a real ‘he’ for the sake of his son’s first true love?

“Hayato…” he let out when his son came back, and drank the whole glass of water he’d brought him in one sip. “Do I know this he?”

Hayato hesitated. It was true; if he suddenly declared he’d lost interest in women for some guy he’d stated he loved, his dad would want to know more, naturally. He wasn’t sure what his dad was imagining or what he was expecting, and he didn’t know how to answer.

“Um…can’t we just…leave it for Christmas? I haven’t confessed yet…”

“What are you doing then? Pursue him, idiot! I might not know him at all but how would you feel if he was taken away? It’s almost Christmas Eve; you have to spend it with him!”

Hayato couldn’t believe he was really hearing the words that came out of his father’s mouth.

“Oyaji…you didn’t hit your head anywhere while I was off, did you?”

“No! But…You know… I just thought that since you finally found someone you say you love so much-“

“Ah, mou ii, wakatta! I’m late, so, you can tell me later, okay?” he said, looking at the clock. “I’m seriously late…” he murmured as he almost jumped to his room and changed clothes. He looked out of the window; it was snowing heavily; it was not a blizzard, but since it was actually sitting everywhere, not melting, it should be freezing outside. He didn’t know if he should feel happy or sad; he loved snow but at the certain moment, that inconvenienced him greatly.

“There’s no way I’m not going anyway…” he whispered to himself, putting on his shoes. “Oyaji, I’m going! Don’t get a heart-attack or anything until Taku is back, okay?”

“I’m not! Shut up!” was the last thing that was heard from inside the house when Hayato closed the door behind him. Finally, work was over for him too and he’d be meeting with Keita, Hikaru, Kosuke and Ryu. He buttoned up his coat and started running down the stairs of the building his apartment was in, and then, when he was on the street, he sped up. The snow falling was hitting him directly, but even when the snowflakes started piling up on his eyelashes he didn’t stop, only ran as fast as he could, until he reached the place where they were waiting for him at.

“Oi, Hayato!” Take yelled, jumping up and down. “Where the HELL have you been? We’re frozen!”

“I’m really sorry guys, I had a talk with my dad and it…kind of ran long. Did you get the tickets?”

“Yeah, I got them all.” Ryu told him, and Hayato smiled.

“Are going in anytime soon?” Tsucchi asked, biting his lower lip. “My head is going to freeze completely!”

“He’s right…” Kosuke murmured, following Take’s example and jumping around to keep warm.

“Okay, let’s go. I don’t want to stay out here for more either.” Hayato said, still panting. Pulling Ryu and Take with him, he entered, immediately followed by Tsucchi and Kosuke.

“Which movie is it, again?” Hayato asked as they gave their tickets to the guide who brought them to their seats.

“Snow Falling on Cedars.” Ryu replied. “You were the one who wanted to watch the movie after reading the book, and you don’t remember?”

“We’ve been hunting down old movies every day for these past two weeks; there were days we even watched 3; how do you expect  me to remember ALL of them?” Hayato asked, taking his seat next to him. “…You’re nice there, aren’t you? Next to the wall.” He teased, but Ryu hit his head.

“Shut up, idiot.”

The night presentation was a great idea, Hayato decided at some point. It was gorgeous, how there were not many people in there; in fact the hall was almost empty, so Take, Hyuuga and Tsucchi had left their seats and picked another part of it to sit and enjoy the movie at, and now he and Ryu were sitting alone, no one sitting in the row behind or in front of them.

“Ne Ryu…” he whispered at some point.

“What is it? Keep it down!”

“There’s something I want to tell you…”

“Right now? Just shut it…”

“But I want to tell you no matter what- “

“Shhh!”

“I love you!” Hayato whispered in Ryu’s ear and, taking advantage of Ryu’s momental freezing as he turned his head to look at him, he leaned to the side and kissed him, just on the moment the movie came to its end.

A few moments later, when the lights were back on, he pulled back. He saw Ryu open his eyes; it could only mean he’d closed them when Hayato kissed him. He couldn’t read was reflected in them though.

“…what was that?”

“?”

“Why?”

“…I told you, didn’t I? Why do you think?”

“Is…” Ryu started but then coughed; he realized that everyone had started walking out, and he stood up. “We’re going back.” He murmured and walked on before Hayato could even sit up.

Almost immediately though, the older boy stood up and ran after him.

“Ryu!” he called out, following the redhead. Catching him just before he exited the building completely, he left him drag him outside too just with the attempt t pull his hand back to free himself.

“Let go!” Ryu frowned, obviously irritated.

“I don’t want to.”

“Let go!”

“I don’t want to!”

“Hayato, let go!”

“I don’t want to! Why are you mad? Tell me!”

“Get away!”

But Hayato didn’t listen. He pushed Ryu to the wall and, ignoring the fact that there were still people walking around them, even if it was late at night, he leaned in and kissed him again, this time slipping his tongue over Ryu’s lips, demanding to conquer him.

Ryu didn’t kick him off, but he didn’t respond either. He just stood, the snow falling on him, his hands tightly held to the wall by Hayato, freezing and shivering to the cold winter breeze that blew and threw the older boy’s strands into his eyes. He didn’t move until Hayato pulled back.

“…Is this why your conversation with your dad ran long?” he asked, trying to sound indifferent. His lower lip burned him; Hayato had been sucking on it.

“I didn’t tell him it was you. But…I love you, Ryu, I…To the point of confessing I actually like a guy to my dad and…”

“I can’t believe this is happening, I…I don’t know how to deal with this.” Ryu said, shaking his head. “What’s this all about, the Christmas miracle?”

“It’s…actually not Christmas yet.” Hayato let out, sounding stupid and took a look on the clock on his cell phone. “…shit, it’s 1:04am.”

“It’s already the 24rth…” Ryu whispered, staring at the snowflakes falling on his hands. “Hayato, I-“

“He said bring her home for Christmas…And when I told him it’s not a ‘she’, and explained, he still didn’t get mad at me, my dad.” Hayato sighed, standing with his arms wide open and his head leaning back, eyes closed. “Instead, you know what he told me? ‘Make him yours’, in brief. ‘Tell him’; he wanted me to have a perfect Christmas Eve as someone in love, like everyone else, that’s how it came out.”

“Hayato…”

“That’s why…Are you coming to my house for Christmas?”

“Hayato.”

“Just see it already!”

“What?”

“It’s already almost Christmas…And I love you!” Hayato yelled, and Ryu slapped him. They both froze, and it wasn’t because of the cold.

“A thing like that…” Ryu started, looking at his reddening hand. “…A thing like that, I already see that.” He said and, taking a step forward, he fell onto Hayato and embraced him. “I already know it.”

“Then…Merry Christmas?”

“Still early but…yes. Merry Christmas.”
