Music Rotation 1/5/10

Man it's been a while since I did this, eh?
Probably because I didn't really listen to anything noteworthy in a LOOOOONG time that people wouldn't be able to find for themselves pretty easily. Or wouldn't think to find for themselves, anyway. I DON'T POST GAZETTE HERE, AND ALL.

Anyway, onto the music!

Name: Metamorphosis
Artist: Dead End
Dead End formed in the 80's, back when X Japan was also starting to get off the ground. Although musically, Dead End would probably be very appealing to fans of the then budding VK scene, Dead End was always stylistically more hard rock and metal, with less of the hair band theatrics of pioneer VK bands like X Japan and Luna Sea. Nonetheless, Dead End found their popularity in other scenes and names like MORRIE (vo.) and CRAZY COOL JOE (ba.)remain well known even after the band broke up in 1990. Many big name Japanese bands after them still tipped their hats to Dead End. The band came together once again in 2004 to release an album, then resurfaced again in 2009 with some rereleases and a NEW album, Metamorphosis.
For such an old band, Dead End is probably one of the freshest things in the VK/hardrock scene right now. I don't know whether that's sad or awesome.

Name: 10
Artist: cali≠gari
Ah...the infamous cali≠gari. Considered one of the pioneers of the eroguro (one of the Japanese' favorite word mashups, combining the words "erotic" and "grotesque") style and culture. While other bands were capturing an audience with androgynously pretty looks and elaborate dress, eroguro bands like cali≠gari were stirring up controversy with their eccentric and not always attractive image and infamously raunchy and racy stage shows. Their music is equally as nuttily original, taking stylistic elements from electronica, industrial, pop, jazz, hard rock and new wave. 10, released in late 2009 is the band's first full album since their break up in 2003.

I don't think its a coincidence that two of the most interesting albums of the year from the scene are from the reunion projects of old bands.
