The bad news: Ian's recovery is going to be much slower than we thought. Yesterday all he could do was lie in bed. He will occasionally try to get up but doesn't have the balance. The was some loss of spinal cord fluid that is at least partly responsible for his balance being off. He is taking codine and it very obvious when it wears off. He is having paralysis on the left side of his face in five minute bursts ever hour or so today. We are about to bring him to the doctor's office to have that checked out. They think it is due to swelling and should only be temporary. He will probably be recovering for the next 2 weeks.
The good news: He is in better spirits today. He laughed for the first time since surgery. He is drinking milk. He can watch 'Signing Time'. Overall he is not in pain and needs less pain medicine today. My mom flew in today to help and my dad will come on Saturday. He is not running a fever which would be the first sign of infection, probably the greatest concern. He likes to be held and we have enough people around so that someone is always holding him.
