Ian Orion Miller

The Orions have been turning up everywhere since we picked the name for our son. The new moon vehicle is named Orion and announced the day after we picked his name.

How we picked the name:

Ian -

We ended up deciding on a more common first name, #58 last year I believe.  It is a form of John which is Jack's legal name.  We don't know anyone named Ian.  The one Ian I have know in my life I really liked.  It is a somewhat british name being commonly used there which for some reason appealed to me.  And there happens to be a Dr Who companion named Ian.  Also  it was a name that the two of us agreed on fairly early in our thinking.

Orion-

Once we decided on a more popular first name, I wanted to do something more interesting with his middle name.  It fulfilled several meaning requirements that I had.  I wanted something star/space/science related.  Obviously, there is the constellation.  And now with this new NASA mission, rocket science is there too.  I wanted something related to fire or light.  Orion, in the baby names book we used means 'son of fire or light.'   I also wanted  peace in the meaning.  His initials are IOM or 'I om', om meaning peace. Another name I was lobbying for was 'Ion' which is contained in 'Orion.'  In addition to 'Ion' it provides other potential nicknames, 'Rion' and 'Ori.'

After sitting with name for a couple of days I realized that in 'Ian Orion Miller'  there are 7 vowels and 7 consonants.  I really like the balance of that and 7 is a nice number.  I have gotten a ton of positive feedback.  This really felt like one of the hardest parts of the process for me because I think it is so important to pick a good name.  It is probably going to be with them the rest of their lives and will shape their life experience.  Big pressure.  We came into the hospital with a few ideas but it took the entire time we were there to finish the process.  I am really happy with the results.
