Legal Tribulations?

Mar 12, 2005 21:40

So, as part of being a lawyerish type person, I'm required to take a certain number of credits to keep abreast of how to get away with violating the law.

Today, that entailed waking up (and waking poor Gil up) at 6am to get to the train station. This, I might add, should be illegal on a Saturday.

My ride wimped out after looking out the window this morning... how many inches of snow did we get? I pressed on. Met my friend Lani on the train and set off for NYU.

I learned a few interesting tidbits. First, that the Rockefeller drug reform that just got passed was designed by a malicious, mutant mathematician hell-bent on making the formulas for calculating jail sentences impossible for mere lawyers to understand (for those who don't know, law school is where all the aspiring doctors go when they can't handle the math). Apparently this is going to affect sentences that began as far back as the 70's... I'm sure many taxpayer dollars are being sucked up to detangle the confuddling legislation.

They even gave us a toy. A little paper wheel thingie which tells you how many drinks by weight you need to get to a certain blood alcohol level. (Wonder if Squad had a part in making this?) The key things I learned were about breathalyzer tests and how they're not accurate at all. Some of the stuff I knew, like how increased body temperature artificially raises the results. Mouth alcohol raises them, which usually occurs when you burp, but in this class the girl who blew a 0.00 and then rinsed with scope blew pretty high numbers. Also your breathing patterns affect the results.

However interesting, after 8 hours of this I was pretty wiped out, and after being waylaid for some time by a few other people I knew, headed home to get Amber. She's been in Canada with her French class the last few days. I can't wait to see the sweet child, even though she left me a charming message about being somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean and eating other passengers to survive. Ah well, can't blame the kid for being a smart-ass like her mother.
