It's amazing how much more patient I can be with new supporting characters when I am promised eventual Tenma, it really is. To the point where I actually got worried about Detective Whatsisface and Doctor Somethingorother! Although possibly that was because TERRIFYING JOHAN IS TERRIFYING and I would worry about anyone in his sphere of influence. WHO LET HIM HANG AROUND CHILDREN. EVEN IF HIS VOICE WAS LESS CREEPY THAN USUAL, HE IS STILL FRIGHTENING ON EVERY LEVEL. The budding Friend was very cute, though. Yes you can has world conquest! As long as you know what you are doing. And now I want to know what Johan would think of Friend. Probably he would not like him very much. Taking over the world is so gauche.
AND THEN, TENMA. Even if only for two very brief moments! I am only slightly ashamed to admit that I squealed and clapped at both of them; I know I have a problem, okay, at least there are far worse characters to be fixated on. If you're going to be obsessed with a fictional person, better you choose a fundamentally decent one. I was going to add "mostly harmless" to that, but then apparently he can deflect a bullet with another bullet so I am thinking maybe he has gotten a little better in that area. TERRIFYING ROBERTO IS ALSO TERRIFYING, although not quite as much as Johan because, well, Johan. It amuses me how effective Johan is at getting men to refer to him as beautiful and life-changing. Actually there have not been many women he's manipulated so far! Probably that will change, but it is nevertheless interesting to think about.
Reading the fifth volume of the manga reminds me of something--both the official translation of the manga and the dub translate the "Mein leiber Doctor Tenma" part of Johan's messages as just "Doctor Tenma", which. Is technically accurate? But is not nearly as creepy as "My dear Doctor Tenma", which is what it actually means. I am not thinking in a slashy way! Mostly. It just befuddles me that they would change it. The ways of official translations are mysterious.
...I think my roommate is judging me for having a lot of free time and not doing anything with it. Um. I did write a page today? Or close to a page? That I should have written yesterday? I HAVE NEVER BEEN A TERRIBLY PRODUCTIVE PERSON except for when I was writing the BDPS, I really am not sure how that happened.
