I am stating for the record that Sengoku Basara is the greatest samurai series that has ever existed or will ever exist in any timeline, dimension, or other alteration of reality. Sure, there's gloriously ridiculous outfits and inexplicable magic powers despite it technically taking place during a real centuries-ago time period. Sure, there's epic more-or-less-canon gay. Sure, one of the characters uses Engrish on a regular basis and remains badass while doing so. But then there's--in the midst of all the color-coded madness--sudden mecha.
Sudden mecha has happened to me three times now, and it remains one of my very favorite things in anime. It is just. Samurai. Time period with not much in the way of technology. And then, mecha.
...pretty much that is all that can be said on the subject.
(Also the gay is pretty epic. I do not believe I have ever seen a male character say that another male character makes his chest seethe. But I could get used to it.)
