Crippled by old age, my iPod has stopped displaying song titles. In fact, it has stopped displaying anything. It i touch the wheel, the screen lights up and reveals nothing. Useful as a nightlight, but little else ( Read more... )

I think the best advertisement for a company is satisfied customers, and seems that in you, Sony has found one.

I'm under warranty for a few more months, and i shall continue to abuse my current investment til it ceases to provide returns (that is, til whenever it is after April that it stops making music completely)...but at that point, i'll be looking into your advice. (I'd prefer the HD variety, but i might learn to be flexible).

We are certainly SonyWhores...ha! It just so happens we find their electronics the most consistantly worth-the-cost. ;)

The flash players are really, really nice - but if I recall, you have a huge music collection too...which is why I insisted on an HD unit for myself. If you're comfortable going through ebay or another online source, I would definitely go that route - you'll get, to use an annoying cliche, much more "bang for the buck" that route (HD). But if total capacity is NOT a huge concern, there are still two very happy flash-consumers in my family. ;)

You mention the compression software...what format does Sony store the music in for the player? Can you put mp3s on directly? Or do you have to convert your music to a different format? How easily can it be extracted? (For a while, i wasn't thinking as i imported my CDs into iTunes, so i have several tracks that are only in AAC format. It'd be a pain to have to re-import these albums. Stupid DRM and incompatible file formats).

I only have mp3s and a few WMAs - I'm not sure about the other formats, because I've never had them to try...but I know these two work, because I forgot to change the settings when I reinstalled the software on my new laptop/20GB filled up much too soon in mp3 format ( ... )
