Long day at work today. Major deadline looming Friday (which really means Monday by 9 AM) and it's funny, because this is a regular occurance, especially in the land of educational publishing. The problem is that a lot of the work is design driven, but it's absolutely controlled by editors. Editors who have no background in editting. Editors with no background in project management. Editors that have only one credential, that at one time they taught kids in a classroom. End result is lots of fucking around and half assing your way through a project because you have no idea what's needed, then three weeks before ship to print deadlines you have to start pulling 11 hour days, 6 day weeks. The best part is that we know that this is the process, but the studio's creative director comes around and always says, "Just this week guys. We have to put in the time and bust ass and then it'll let up a bit and we can relax." Today Brock called him on it, saying, "You mean on Sunday, because there's another deadline next week." We all laughed our asses off. We aren't upset. It's not unexpected at all. We know when the deadlines are, we know the process. We know what's expected. But this is the first time I heard it spoken outloud to Brian and the look on his face was nothing if not stone cold hilarious.
After work I stopped by J & R to pick up a new router. Just a cheapo linksys. The same kind that defaults o a wireless network called "Linksys" with the password for the router admin screen "admin" (no username). The same type that is usually behind cases of idiots complaining about someone "stealing their wireless." Thing is, these are pretty damn solid routers if you set them up correctly, and J & R was selling them for $45. My old router has officially kicked the bucket, so it was time to pony up anyways. The old one was 4 and a half years old and had seen better days. Between the uploading of my entire music collection to my web server and the uploading of my Snuffy Smiles collection to schmindie schmorrents, it was dropping the signal every 30 minutes. I'm hoping that this one will hold up much better, but if not, I'm only out 20 minutes of freelance work, so life goes on. Putting it through some major paces right now, so we'll see.
Question time:
1) Anyone else addicted to Top Design like I am? I'm addicted to all of those Bravo contest reality shows, but I really like Top Design. I thought I'd hate it, but I don't know. I still think it'd be better if it was graphic rather than interior design. Give 12 designers some fucked up rules and set them free to knock out their best work. Shit, that'd be spectacular. There's so much drama that would ensue.
2) Chris, why do you not like the new Against Me! track? It doesn't hold a candle to Reinventing Axl Rose, but is much better than anything from Eternal Cowboy (other than Cliche Guevara).
3) Why is there a pirate skull on my TV?
