OK, on to van Gogh now. The episode I've been looking forward to ever since I was told Richard Curtis was brought on board. Did it live up to my expectations?
5x10 Vincent and the Doctor
Absolutely. It was simultaneously charming, depressing and funny. Van Gogh was brilliant. Shouldn't he have had a mutilated ear lobe? He seemed pretty symmetrical to me. Anyways, he was frenetic! I absolutely loved that they brought him to the future to show him how he became world-famous and acknowledged posthumously. And the part where they are stargazing and the sky turns into a painting. And the sunflowers! Amy and the sunflowers were hilarious. And the accent and ginger jokes. And basically everything. And the death of the monster, the hatred of the villagers and the portrayal of van Gogh's mental problems and self-deprication, they were quite touching and upsetting.
Oh and the hilarious parts: The Doctor fighting the air. Amy wandering the streets alone looking for the Doctor who's being chased by the monster because she was bored. Oh, and the follow-up with van Gogh snoring. The Doctor's thingimajiggy. Which writes out stuff in English and is connected to the TARDIS with a bloody jack plug. Basically, THE TARDIS HAS A JACK CONNECTOR. The First and Second Doctor appearing on the screen. The QWERTY typewriter (just realising the obvious). Amy breathing too loud. The Doctor being absolutely bored while van Gogh is painting. And this:
'I'm going in.'
'I'm coming too.'
'No! You're Vincent van Gogh. No.'
'But you're not armed!'
'I am!'
'What with?'
'Overconfidence, this and a small screwdriver. I'm absolutely sorted.'
Have I mentioned I loved the dialogues? And the characters? Absolutely fantastic. I love this episode.
