Character info
Series/Fandom: Final Fantasy XI (Wings of the Goddess)
Character's Name: Lilisette
Character's Sex: Female
Character's Age: 19
Canon point: Shortly after her final appearance in the Wings of the Goddess missions (once Lilith is defeated and Lilisette disappears into Atomos).
Abilities: Lilisette is a dancer. Not only does she entertain on the stage (in a very classy way, mind; none of that sleaze), she also takes her talents to the battlefield. She excels in close-range combat with twin daggers, and she uses her dances to perform a wide variety of tasks. There are Waltzes, which heal HP and status effects. Sambas act as a constant ailment on foes and slowly drain their HP and MP, as well as reduce things like hit delay. Steps enfeeble an enemy (things like lowering evasion and defense), and Flourishes do a wide variety of things, such as provoking targets, stunning opponents, and even enhancing the potency of the user's weapon skills.

On top of the generic dances, Lilisette has a few things that are unique to her. She has two unique weapon skills - Whirling Edge and Dancer's Fury - as well as a few special dances. These are:

○ Sensual Dance - Grants an attack bonus to all allies and attack down to all enemies.
○ Thorned Stance - Grants a large defense bonus to only her.
○ Vivifying Waltz - Grants 300% TP and restores HP to everyone in range. This is used very rarely.

Personality:Lilisette appears to be a confident, elegant, sensual dancer to the world. And when she’s dancing, she truly is. On the stage she soaks in the limelight and enjoys her role as the “Moonshade Butterfly.” Offstage, amongst her troupe mates, she’s referred to as the “Moonshade Wolverine.” She’s won this title thanks to her treatment of her male fans and would-be suitors. When it comes to men who seek to suit her, she often sends them packing with broken egos, but if they persist with smooth moves she’s been known to break a few noses and dislocate a few jaws. Lilisette says she turns men away because she doesn’t like weak men, but in truth she simply does not trust them to stand beside her. For all of the confidence she exudes on stage, she keeps people at an arm’s length. She’s scared to let them too close because she’s used to them betraying her. After losing her parents, Lilisette was just another war orphan in a country of overzealous Elvaan who did not accept her mixed heritage. When she traveled to the past, she began to experience unbelievable experiences. No matter how beautiful men thought she was, or how much interest they showed in her, she ended up getting laughed at by them as soon as she opened her mouth. Thus she’s extremely hard on the men she meets, especially if they show interest in her physical beauty.

Unfortunately for would-be suitors, she also idealizes her father to a great extent. A lot of her character is built off of her father’s. Indeed, almost every part of her is built upon her father’s personality. She’s headstrong, she’s misunderstood, she’s outwardly cheerful, and she’s inwardly gentle. Despite how she’s been treated in the past by Elvaan, she seems to hold both the values of their knights and their nobles in high regard.

One of her fellow dancers refers to Lilisette as a “hard-nosed little scrapper,” and she proves her ability to claw her way through tough situations on more than one occasion. Whether it’s a suitor or an enemy, those who incite her fury never fare well. When facing her enemies she fights with all the grace and nobility of her parents--the mixed heritage of a dancer and a knight--and she’s even been known to formally announce herself to her foes before crossing blades with them. She’s also very quick to scold someone for not adhering to the rules of propriety, as she does when she reprimands Haudrale, saying that, “a gentleman replies when addressed by a lady.”

When she believes that she is right, she will not be dissuaded from her path by outsiders. Believing Cait Sith to be her enemy she pursues the regal feline with a bit of single-mindedness, going to extremes to trap the cat and enlisting the help of anyone who will listen to her. She thinks that as long as she believes in something, she cannot go wrong, and it is to her own goals that she is the most loyal. She doesn’t mind using people to achieve her goals, she’s rather selfish and spoiled, but for as headstrong as she appears, if those close to her begin to second-guess her she begins to lose her nerve. She’s shaken surprisingly easily by those she considers friends, and in general people get under her skin constantly. The easiest way to get to her is to second-guess her, or question her motives. Or, if you really want to make Lilisette mad, laughing at something she takes seriously will quickly set her off. When she’s upset or flustered she tends to stutter and spout the first thing that comes to mind. This causes her to maintain a superficial façade of strength and, in some cases, arrogance, but the closer people get to her the more they see how much she takes those events to heart. Of course, the more fragile she feels the more of a front she’ll put up.

But Lilisette is like an egg. For all of her hardness on the outside, she’s very soft and vulnerable inside. Though her rare, mixed bloodline gives her a unique, exotic beauty, it also adds to the reason she often feels alone in the world. After her parents die, this feeling increases, and though she tries to cover it up with a smile her loneliness constantly plagues her. Eventually it essentially kills her, as it causes her to lose all hope and, in her despair, she succumbs to Atomos. As much as it is a weakness, though, the loneliness that eats away at her is also what drives her. It sends her on her quest to save her father, it causes her to seek a duo partner that fortifies her in her times of need, and it helps her understand the alternate form of herself, which gives her the strength to take up Lilith’s final plea to restore humanity in the alternate future of Vana’diel.

[When the feed clicks on, a pair of red heels can be seen. It gradually pans up to show the dancer who appears distraught and confused as she looks around the town. A white paw reaches up and tugs on her skirt and draws her attention down to the moogle and device it holds. With eyes on her Lilisette puts on a brave smile before she crouches down to see the moogle.]

Hello, there. [This is a creature that's familiar to her at least.]

This is for you, kupo! [She reaches out for the munny, her golden bangles jingling on her wrist.] And this, too, kupo! Cheer up, kupo!

[Lilisette answers by offering the moogle a brighter smile.] You've my thanks. Can you tell me where I've landed? I don't recall exactly what transpired...

[All she remembers is sealing Atomos's gates in Lilith's world, and then nothing but darkness. It's remarkably similar to the time she allowed herself to be eaten by Atomos, but her dream then had been of herself in Lilith's future--different circumstances but the same world. There's nothing familiar about this place.]

[The moogle offers her a sympathetic look.] Perhaps you should ask them, kupo!

[Lilisette's brows furrow in thought, but she scans the area. Like she thought, the only people around are the ones trying to hastily go about their business and ignore her.] Not them, kupo. [A pink-padded paw taps the screen of the phone.] These people, kupo!

Wh-what? [Her jaw drops open slightly as she looks at the device. It's more advanced than anything in her world.] How would I go about using such a contraption?

[She reaches out for the phone, turning it over a few times as she inspects it.] I already turned it on for you, kupo! Say hi. Mind your manners, kupo!

Why would you... [But when she looks up to finish asking her question the moogle is already toddling off.] H-Hey! Oh, Altana help me... I pray you've some purpose for all of this. [Her face clearly reads that she's not happy about being abandoned, and after a long while she looks back to the phone. She has the sense to know where the lens it, even if she holds it cock-eyed.]

Well, I suppose that's that. If anyone's actually looking at this thing... [She forces a smile and offers a short wave.] Hello!

If there was one thing Lilisette hated, it was waiting. She was bad at it. When she was told to sit around and do nothing she felt as if she would go stir crazy. Every muscle in her body hummed with energy--demanded movement. It was what made being a dancer so rewarding - there were rarely times when she wasn't doing something as a dancer - and it was what got her into trouble. As a child her father had tried to stem her excessive energy by training her in the ways of a royal knight, but she lacked the patience and the breeding to ever fill the role of one of San d'Oria's noble guards. Her mother had quickly stepped in to train her in the Kriegstanz, and it had given the girl a purpose and a goal. But, like everything else, it led to getting her into trouble.

When she had stepped into the past with the intention of saving her father from the wound that would eventually kill him, she had blended in by using the dances her mother had taught her. Now she had usurped her mother's role as the star of Troupe Mayakov--the famed "Moonshade Butterfly"--so that she could watch over her would-be father from afar, and bond with her would-be mother. There was likely some kind of divine law against all of this, she knew, but she had to do something. As a child she had helplessly watched her parents die; now she could change that. She could save them, and they could be a family again.

But she was on the brink of destroying everything. No, that was wrong. She was on the verge of losing everything.

"Lady Lilith wishes all due privacy for her long-awaited family reunion," the Elvaan Spitewarden spoke from where he stood near the Shadow Lord's throne. Made of shadow and darkness, Lilisette could not see his mouth move, but she could feel the cold glare of his white eyes as they considered her. She met that glare with her own. "Those who would trespass shall be made to sorely regret it."

"'Family reunion'!?" Lilisette scoffed, her tone angry and exasperated.

She still could not believe that Lady Lilith was born from the same parents; was she not trying to get them killed just beyond the room she was trapped in? Even if they lived through the pact they forged with Odin, they would be forever changed. No, her father was not a tool. She would not allow her parents to be harmed, and that was exactly what Lilith was doing.

"What rot!" The growl in the back of her throat was only a small indicator that she was upset. "This is making me really--truly--mad! You Spitewardens will rue the day you put me into such a foul mood!"

With her daggers already at the ready, she threw a quick look over her shoulder to her parter - the other half to her tag team she called "Future Fabulous" - and nodded. "With me," she instructed, before she turned her gaze back to the two Spitewardens who stood in their way.

The clash of steel echoed through the throne room, the harsh sound bouncing off of the dark, marble walls. Her shoes tapped out dances to a silent beat between the swings of her dagger, and she could smell the thick stench of dark magic as it was summoned. By herself she might have been worried, but with her partner she did not doubt her outcome. She placed her utmost faith in them, and they were, after all, two halves of a whole. It was nice to know that she had someone she could rely on even in such dark moments--to know that someone had her back even when the world shunned her.

How many battles had they managed to scrape through? There was Galarhigg, the treant, the Battle of Jeuno, the demon general in Beaucedine, the Cait Sith and avatar of Atomos--so many battles. And only her partner had remembered her when everyone else had begun to forget. Before the whole mess started Lilisette would have said that she was perfectly fine on her own, but now she knew: she needed this companionship.

"My thanks," Lilisette called out with a smile when her partner blocked an attack that would have slid into her side. The favor was repaid not long after when the dancer launched herself into the air, flipping over the head of the Spitewarden and landed behind him. A quick tap of her toes to cast Animated Flourish and the Spitewarden turned from her companion, allowing them both enough time to recover.

Once one of the Spitewardens fell, the other was soon to follow. As soon as they both fell to the floor, Lilisette turned and headed to the doors, forcing her way through. Her partner could take care of the rest; what worried her was the status of her parents. Nearing the ring of flame where Odin had been summoned, Lilisette could only make out the down-turned faces of her parents as the stood together. Behind them Odin reared up onto Sleipnir, spouting something about the flames of Asgarth. Was it already over? Had they already made their pact?

"Portia! Sir Ragelise!" She called out to them using the names she had learned to call them in the past, so that they would not know her identity. But it was already too late, and the situation was dire. She closed her eyes and shook her head, resolve filling her. "No. I've been saying it all wrong. Father! Mother!"

"I see you've taken it upon yourself to deprive me of two playing pieces," Lilith commented coldly from the side. "But no matter. Victory is never without sacrifice."

Lilisette's jaw dropped in shock, and her brows knit in fear. So she was too late. This whole journey--what was the point if she lost them all over again?

"No," she nearly buckled under the weight of her sorrow, but she could feel her partner at her back. "Please, tell me this isn't happening!"

Still her parents said nothing. Did they not care? After all she had tried to do for them, were they mad at her? She had, after all, made a mess of everything. The past, the future... Everything was turned on its head because of her presence. How could they forgive her?

The final straw was when Lilith summoned her last "playing piece"--a dark form of Lilisette's very own partner. Would even they abandon her? Pain flared through her body, and Lilisette grasped at her chest. She could hardly breathe from the weight of the guilt and shame that bore down on her. What had she done? What right did she have to be in the past--in a place she did not belong?

"Th-this is like," she choked out the words as she doubled over, "a... nightmare!"

Though she could hear the words of Cait Sith trying to reach her through her despair, it was already too late. She had never been good at waiting, and she had charged into every event in her life without looking at what consequences might await her. Growing up she had stayed active so that she could escape the disapproving looks she received due to her mixed blood. When her parents had died when she was still a child, she had begun running and had not allowed herself to stop. She could escape judgement, pain, and grief by recklessly charging forward. If she stumbled she picked herself up and moved on, and there had been plenty of stones on this path that had knocked her over. But now she had hit a wall, one that had left her reeling.

That was the first time she had fallen into darkness.

Notes: Lilisette made a decision to take up the mantle of her counterpart, Lady Lilith. They're the same person from different futures. It's likely not even relevant, but it should still be noted.
