Carpentry and construction jobs pay reallly well, especially if you can get into the city union... and they require mass amounts of physical labor and sometimes a little too much heat.
The best-paid jobs involve the least physical effort. Well, yesssss, that's sort of true. But I visit a forum occasionally where people complain bitterly that they have spent years trying to earn qualifications and become teachers and things like that, and they earn so little compared to tradespeople (like plumbers, carpenters, plasterers ... this is in the UK so they may get paid less in the USA, perhaps.)
