war and conservation

We are at war! Moreover, this war is closely tied to our concerns about the oil supply, but, in any case, it is a war and there is something I simply don't understand about the war effort: Why isn't the government urging citizens to conserve energy? To save bacon drippings for gun powder... or to conserve heating oil and reduce the number of car trips we take to save oil? How can we keep steaming along consuming more of the world resources per-capita than anyone else when we're fighting a war over scarce resources? Shouldn't we try to become independent of the Mid-East oil lords with their totalitarian regimes and the terrorists those regimes spawn?

I mean long ago, in another war we did just that. America was attacked by the Japanese and we turned every thing we had towards production for the war and conservation.

I happen to think that this war is unjust, that we're fighting the wrong people for the wrong reasons... but, if we must fight it let's do it right.
