Have you read Philip Lopate's book, Waterfront: A Journey around Manhattan? He travels around the island, too (in a much more leisurely manner, and not in one day), musing, critiquing and digressing as he goes. (At one point he does try to walk around Manhattan in a single day, with a group of people who do it every year, and gets about half way around.)
It's a rich and fascinating book, and I think you might like it.
