The external appearence of something and the internal workings of it both count for what they are. Sometimes somebody finds a deep sense of purpose in looking a certain way, and a lot of art is made for the soul purpose of appearence. Appearence is a beautiful thing and while it may not make the world go around, it makes the world a place worth going around. Appearence and functionality aren't more or less important than one another absolutely, because appearing a certain way can be somebody's function, and somebody's functionality can also be their appearence.

I'd tell kids to think for themselves and not to hold anything that they're spending time, energy, and worry upon as valuable without constant and critical questioning. Some people focus on appearences because everybody around them is focussed on appearences and the never think to question whether or not they really care independent of what everbody else thinks, while some people might look deep inside themselves and discover "What's really important for me is to look this way" or "what's realy important for me is the way my house or my painting or my garden looks."
