On Arrakis, the shifts of temperature caused by the seasons were subtle, but Leto knew that the increase in the number of storms out in the open desert that was the equivalent of winter were the result of a drop in temperature by a few degrees. The storms were magnificent. He was the only living being apart from the sandworm who had experienced ( Read more... )

Ghanima had gone home the moment the term ended, needing the desert sands and the rhythms of Dune more than she had been willing to admit. That did not mean she was blind to that which had been going on around her from the moment of her arrival.

Which was why she was waiting to waylay her twin. "You are withholding from me again, Leto."

The last time he had done so, he had allowed her to think him dead. It was possible Ghanima did not approve of this development.

Leto extended a hand towards his twin. "I know that bothers you. I'm sorry."

Within, he debated with himself and his father how much he could tell her. Some things would be obvious soon enough, but the true purpose?

"The storm last night... I think the coming one will be even more impressive."

She took his hand, but looked at him reprovingly. "Leto."

"I may not see as much as you, but you are not the only one walking this Golden Path. All storms will only grow more impressive until we reach the crucible." And he could read what meaning he wished into her words. He was not the only Atreides twin capable of playing this game.

He squeezed her fingers, giving her a small, apologetic smile. He wasn't being fair, and he knew it.

"The Tleilaxu will deliver a ghola shortly, made on my orders. As they believe they don't take orders from me, there is an agreement, but unless they play their game well they will not benefit from it."

He had hinted at this, but never told her explicitly before, but that didn't mean Ghanima didn't know.

"You are cruel to do this." Oh, she knew many of the reasons, if not all, but that didn't make this any easier. "And what will trigger this one? Will you make him try to kill you, since our father is no longer an option? Or Irulan, or me?"

"You can even have Hania in her cradle, if you want an exact reenactment."

Oh, but this was nothing compared to the many cruelties that were to come.

"I haven't decided yet," he said truthfully. "But offering myself as a target is appropriate, don't you think? Hania will have no part to play in this, though, I promise you that."

She would never play a part in the Golden Path. She would be free, like no one else in this Universe could be.

"It bothers you."

"Of course it does." Ghanima spent most of her year trying to help children break from 'destinies' that were forced on them. She hadn't even lifted a finger to nudge Leto in any direction, adhering to his desire to let him make his own decisions. "I know my part, and I know I will play it in due time. I accepted that the moment we walked down the stairs of my wedding."

"I am sacrificing my children, and theirs, to the Path." And Hania would be spared, and Alice as much as she could be. Ghanima was glad of that beyond measure. "But must we sacrifice the dead, too? Let him rest, Leto. Two deaths for Atreides is enough for anyone."

"Dying for the Atreides will be his destiny," Leto replied. "Dying - and living." He turned away a little, his gaze moving to the desert horizon visible through the open window.

"You know being merciful was never going to be a part of this."

"Mercy has everything to do with this," Ghanima countered, walking over to place a hand on his wormskin. "Cruelty would be turning away from it all and letting the inevitable happen. Taking our happiness at the expense of humanity's eventual - nightmarish - extinction."

"That does not mean I will not fight against unnecessary cruelties when and where I can."

Leto turned his head to meet her eyes. "And if I tell you this is necessary?"

"I will accept it, to an extent," Ghanima answered truthfully. "I will not like it. I will push back against your reasons and your arguments to make sure you are doing it because you must, and not because you feel that you must. I will never like it; I will most likely never agree with it. But if it is necessary, I will not stop you."

And if it was not necessary, she would. But neither of them needed to say that.

"And what will make you accept this?"

Ghanima might not be able to stop him, but he would not want her to have to try. He needed her for this, now, to stay as human as he could for as long as he could.

"Look at me and tell me that there is no other way to accomplish this," was her instant answer. "That there is no other method, no matter how long and complicated."

"That you do not do this because we miss him, and you want his counsel."

He reached for both her hands, facing her. "For as long as I can, I will be merciful. But Duncan has a part to play and will continue to play that part for millennia to come."

That would tell Ghani that the Bene Gesserit breeding program that was now Leto's needed Duncan Idaho. It might or might not tell her how many times Idaho would have to return.

"Neither of us are made for mercy," Ghanima replied wryly, placing her hands in his. "We are desert creatures playing Imperial games; damned if we do, and damned if we don't."

On one hand, this meant that, in a way, Duncan finally got to become a part of the Atreides family in a way he had never managed while married to Alia. Children. Ghanima hoped it would bring him some small comfort.

"Just remember to stop and think about what is necessity and what is simply the simpler soloution," she continued, chiding him gently. "I will understand, although not always agree, but you might do Stilgar, Irulan, Gurney, and our Grandmother the courtesy of warning them first. This will be especially hard on Stil, you know."

He gave a small nod, and a tiny smile appeared. He needed Ghanima to remind him of the important action of communicating with his family.

"I will tell them. And I will tell Alice too. She might not have met him, but she has been told the story."
