Arrakeen, Friday afternoon, 10,224 AG

A dry desert breeze blew through the city of Arrakeen. There was a hint of moisture in the air that would have been impossible a decade or two ago, but it was unnoticable to most, and especially to visitors, who would find the dry heat of the sun too much. The palace, built in the centre of the city, provided plenty of shade, however, and soon the ( Read more... )

All the guest rooms chosen lay close to each other, as the palace was certainly large enough to get lost in. There was an inside garden, full of lush plants, just nearby, in case the dryness of the desert would be too much.

Karla hadn't been expecting to find a garden like this anywhere in Arrakeen; especially not in the middle of the palace. But the scent of green things next to her rooms had attracted her curiosity and sent her wandering.

Upon finding it, though, she couldn't help but let out a delighted squeal and promptly go exploring.

After settling into his room, Jack was on his way to do a bit more exploring when he heard a familiar squeal and went to track down the source. "Is that a Karla?" he asked, once he'd gotten close enough to be fairly sure it was and he wasn't just embarrassing himself.

"Eeeeee!"

It was a really lovely garden, okay? All the more so for being unexpected.

"I mean...no? Because Karla would be ever so much more dignified and grown up."

"Ah. A trick of the light," Jack said, hand at his mouth to hide his smirk. "Sorry to disturb you, miss."

"Forgiven," Karla said, her voice suddenly going much higher-pitched than it had a moment before. Because clearly that would fool Jack into thinking she was someone else. "But I do believe I saw a very dignified and grown up female back behind another tree. I'll go send her out to see you!"

She scurried away to another tree, rustling the nearby plants and quietly cursing. She didn't want to accidentally harm any of them!

...Surely Jack hadn't noticed that, right?

"Jack!" she said, coming out from with her arms spread wide. "How wonderful to see you! I didn't hear you come in! I was...deep in silent and mature contemplation!"

Jack had noticed nothing; he had been struck deaf and blind by Karla's clever ruse. (And if he wasn't, he was far too polite to ever comment on such.)

"Of course," he agreed stoutly. "These gardens invite such. I was just thinking how stepping into it made me want to act at least ten years older."

Smiling, he added, "It's good to see you, too."

Karla was the rusiest. It was a fact!

"Aren't they lovely?" she said, looking back around with genuine fascination. "I never expected to see anything like them. I'm sternly reminding myself that I probably shouldn't settle in and start mucking about without checking with Leto first."

But it was haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard.

"Oh, I don't think he'd mind," Jack enabled. "Besides, there are servants and such. They'd go find if you went too far and got lost in the desert. But he or Alice might hurt you if you missed Hania's naming ceremony."

"Like I would miss that!" Karla said, sounding injured. "It's a very important ceremony! The whole reason I'm here!"

"...And I would totally make sure I asked someone to come in here and drag me back in time to get ready."

Because otherwise? Yes, it was very possible Karla would get lost in the garden full of plants she'd never seen before. More than possible. Likely.

"How've you been, my dear," she added, before Jack finished twisting her arm. "Will I see you for Homecoming next weekend?"

"I'm not sure," Jack said honestly, momentarily distracted from the plants. "Island and I aren't getting along these days. Might deny it my company for a bit and see if it learns to play nice."

"Really?" Karla drew back a little to look at him, troubled. "What's it doing now?"

If he didn't show, she would miss him. At the same time, it seemed an unfair card to play if he really didn't want to come for a visit.

"The last time things went insane, it turned me into a vampire. I killed Kate and Ronan," Jack said evenly. "It was all put right by Monday, but -- it scared me, and besides, I'm tired of things like that. Though of course I would miss everyone..."

He truly was undecided. "Perhaps I'll come in Sunday, and leave straightaway if everyone else is already mad, or five, or what have you."

"I had sex with Nathan and Seifer and Warren poisoned me," Karla said, sympathizing. Things someone could only ever say to another Fandomite without sounding crazy. Or, at least, with the understanding that it was the island that was crazy, not you. "We'd miss you too, but I'll understand if you need a break. Murdering your friends--even if it doesn't stick--tends to make you a little uncomfortable for awhile."

"Just a little," Jack had to agree. Then he blinked. "... murdered any friends lately, Karla?"

He wasn't touching the Nathan part.

For which she was beyond grateful. Ewww, Nathan.

"Not recently," she said quietly. "That past crazy weekend, I found out I was a long-lost Skywalker, but my baser incarnations were all channeled towards sex with people I rather wouldn't."

That wasn't to say she hadn't murdered friends before, if only in bouts of Fandom weird. The time before, when she'd turned into an assassin for Merlin. The other-Fandom where she'd killed several people she counted friends. Including that world's version of Leto.
