Some People-A Fanfiction Rant

Feb 17, 2010 08:48

Okay, so I was reading stuff on a LiveJournal community (will not say which one because it's big and popular and everyone would chase after me with knives and other sharp things if they knew I was ranting about them) that made me want to punch my fist through a wall.

So, there was an entry about deleting old fanfiction because the author wanted a break (either from that fandom, fanfiction in general, or writing in general).  Basically, original poster was "WAAAAAH!  They deleted all their stories and now I don't have anything to read!  WAAAAAH!"  While I have no sympathy for them because guess what, it's the fanfic author's choice what they do (yeah, hard concept to grasp), the comments made me much more angry.

People actually agreed that deleting old fanfiction was a pet peeve of theirs and "But what if someone new to the fandom wanted to read it?"  Then I guess they're screwed.  Or not.  If you get into the fandom late and you don't see this particular piece of writing because it was already deleted, it's not like you're going to miss it.  But see, these people aren't getting that.  It's all "Oh noes, somebody broke one of our rules!"  Yeah?  Deal with it.  Unless you are the god of fanfiction, your rules are your rules and not anyone else's.  People get to do what they want.

God I hate fanfiction.  It's not that I've ever been part of a fandom (in fact, I've dropped favorite shows and movies because the fandom totally screwed with them) to begin with, but off and on I keep thinking "Maybe I should.  Everyone says it's a great way to meet people."  That sounds good.  It's hard to find a good, close-nit writing community.  The NaNoWriMo boards are either dead or so busy you can't find the topic you want.  Writing.com claims to give free users all these good benefits, but all the good stuff you have to pay for.  Not only that, but unless your story is featured and unless people like it and become always-reviwers, you don't have as many chances to meet people.  Other writing communities are in message board form like NaNoWriMo, but they're not safe to post even excerpts of your novel if you wanted critique.  I'm really more of a completely original fiction writer anyway, but still.  If fanfiction was a good way to meet people, I could probably write a story or two.  After this post I read, which seems like they're doing it right up to the end when suddenly they break another rule (that you may or may not have made public), I am not impressed.

waaaaah!, writing, fanfiction, rant, original fiction
