Played through chapters 5 all the way to the end for Saitou's route, go me! (the last time I played was 23rd June this year lol FAIL)
Seriously, Hakuouki is one satisfying game. Somehow, it doesn't give me those fluffy after-feelings that I get from games like Tokimemo GS, Starry Sky, etc. Kind of like Harutoki, but in a more serious sense? There are moments that make you go "bawwwww" but the storyline for Hakuouki is A++++. I was discussing with a friend earlier, it should be nicknamed Hakuouki Shinsendramagumi or something but it's true, the story really grips you and so many times I felt my heart racing because I was wondering what's going to happen next.
The parts where the Shinsengumi split was when everything started getting really painful. Everyone had different ideals, and soon after Sano and Shinpachi decided to part from them after arguing with Kondou; which is after they ran back to their HQ in Edo AFTER they got attacked while traveling up north.
Before that scene though was one scene whereby Chizuru couldn't sleep, and she saw Saitou go off somewhere and decided to follow. There, he was sharing with her about what he thinks of the way of the samurai and that's his only way of living; and how it'll come to an end soon as an era of samurais without their swords will begin.
After Saitou's heart-pouring session, his rasetsu began to take over and that's when you get the first CG of him taking blood from Chizuru xD; Chizuru offered to give him her blood, but instead Saitou orders her to give him her kodachi and he makes a small wound at her... EAR LOBE?! looooool ok I can understand he doesn't want to hurt her in the slightest bit but I find that... rather cute awwww.
Chapter 6 ends, and then 7 leads up to the point whereby they had to escape from their Edo HQ AGAIN because the rasetsu soldiers keep on coming, and this time leaded by Sannan. :( Kondou and Hijikata stay back to buy them sometime while everyone escapes, but alas Kondou gets caught. Hijikata and Heisuke join Saitou, Kai and Chizuru soon after and they find out that Kondou gets beheaded (after Hiji decided to go back and save him but noooooo). The party decided to split ways at Aizuhan, whereby Saitou decided that's where his roots as a samurai began and he will end it there, and once again the Shinsengumi part ways. :((((
However while they were STILL in Edo in this chapter, there was once where Saitou collapsed and Chizuru gave him blood again, but even after her wound closed Saitou wouldn't stop aiyoooooo ^q^ Not until Chizuru was like, "ermm if you need more blood I can make another wound" and THAT'S when Saitou came back to reality, all flustered and blushing lol GJ
Neways in chapter 8, of course you choose to stay with Saitou. Saitou kept coercing Chizuru to follow Hijikata because he doesn't want her to get hurt, but she stayed her ground and he finally kept silent. After Chizuru asked, "would you let me stay by your side?" for the last time, Saitou just went over and embraced her, and thus the kiss CG. AWWWWWW
They head towards Aizu at and night when they were resting, what they thought was an enemy ambush was actually Sano and Shinpa! I felt like SUCH an idiot grinning when they appeared, because I really love the Shinsengumi to bits and it's nice to see a reunion. ;A; Right after they meet, a group of rasetsu soldiers attack and they defeat them. One still lives, and after Saitou gave him some blood to speak (he still had some conscience left), he told the crew that the demons have taken over Shirakawajou and not only do they turn soldiers into rasetsu, but civilians like him too. After he says his piece, he disintegrates into sand.
Resolving to end this rasetsu nonsense once and for all, they set out to defeat Kazama and co. AND THIS IS WHERE IT STARTS BECOMING LIKE FINAL FANTASY?! LOOOOOOOL IDK MAN maybe I play too many RPGs but the end really felt that way to me. In summary:
Gate Boss: Shiranui
Party that remains behind: Sano & Shinpa
-> Proceed to inner sanctuary
Mid Boss: Chizuru papa Kodou
Saitou proceeds to beat the shit out of him, but jeng jeng! HEISUKE COMES TO RESOLVE SOME SHIT. ok Heisuke appearing was such a nice thing to happen and I nearly jumped for joy. So ok, Heisuke decides to beat the living daylights outta Kodou after Kodou spews some depressing stuff about rasetsu eating the life of its host and asking Saitou "HEY ARE YOU DEPRESSED YET" and Heisuke's all, "shut up dude, we ain't scared of death because the day we took up our swords was the day we knew our lives were fleeting and can end any minute". HEISUKE +9000 KODOU -9000
-> Proceed to highest level aka Nice Tatami Room
Last Boss: Kazama Chikage & Amagiri (kinda)
I felt really bad that we were going to kill Chikage (ok folks I LIKE the dude alright? and his Chizuru-mania) but Chikage is exceptionally cruel in Saitou's route. Amagiri and Chizuru are spectators to their duel, and Saitou turns into SEED mode rasetsu and manages to injure Chikage a bit, until our dear demon can't stand the fact that he's being beaten by a 番犬 (watch dog, wouchh his insults are even worse).
>> KAZAMA CHIKAGE, ONE WINGED ANGEL LAST TRANSFORMATION <<
He turns into full Oni mode and literally leaves Saitou on critical 1HP, and while Saitou is bleeding to death on the ground he kicks him around like a ragdoll and throws more insults, until Chizuru begs him to stop and unsheathes her kodachi to step in--- but! Amagiri does so, and gives Chikage a good whack which disables him further. Amagiri's reasoning is that a person who steps upon the honour and dignity of another is simply despicable, which makes you wonder that they weren't really comrades at all. So Chikage is all 己ええええええええ and 貴様ああああ over the place, and just as he's about to deal a final blow to Saitou...
Shinpachi, Sano and Heisuke barge in like the Final Party Members you have, and they have this Unite Attack and Kazama's energy is at its lowest now. They then give motivational lines to Saitou, and then Saitou deals the final blow to Chikage. Now I am QUITE unclear if Chikage is dead or not, because it is just said that he fell to the ground and THEN the BGM changes and Amagiri tells Saitou not to worry about the ochimizu having effect on him too much then exits. The next scene is of everyone outside the castle and parting ways already. :(
Just before the end of the chapter as Sano and Shinpa were saying their goodbyes again, they said that Saitou finally found something he wants to protect that isn't a warlord, which obviously is Chizuru and Saitou goes "......何の意味だ。" or something like that and blushes like a tomato, to which Shinpachi FREAKS OUT because they have never seen him like that before 8DDD But the minute he freaks, Saitou draws his sword and holds it at Shinpa's throat hahahah! Poor man can't take a joke. XD
The final chapter begins and Saitou and Chizuru have now arrived in Ezo (Hokkaido). As for what happened to the rest, my brain was already frying from all the difficult kanji due to hours of playing but from what I can gather:
- Shinpachi returns to Edo, works as something he's always wanted to do
- Sanosuke leaves the country???? I dunno I saw the word 外国 so I ain't sure
- Okita succumbs to his illness T_____________T
- Hijikata died at Hakodate in battle :(((((((((((((((((((
- It is most likely that Heisuke died along with him too :(((((((((((((((((((
- WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH THIS IS ME CRYING
When I was reading the epilogue and when the そして新たな日々へと BGM was playing I was sobbing pretty damned hard. The ending has this nostalgic longing for something or someone that has been lost, aka everyone who has died so far or the times that once were, but never again. Anyways, for Saitou's ending, he comes home after a day of work but pauses outside the door even if he can hear Chizuru calling for him. And he looks away. Frustrated, Chizuru finally calls him "Hajime-san" and he turns around and says "tadaima" OMFGGGGGGG moe points over 9000
She beckons him to get into the house since it's cold, but he tells her to wait outside for a bit and soon, they both see the snowflakes falling from the sky together. I don't quite remember what was being said, but when Saitou said that even if it's now an era of samurai without their swords, he can still be a swordsman at heart and in many ways because that's the very essence of his being. Oh god Saitou...... ;______________;
If you read through all of that, erm thanks I KNOW I RANT A LOT WITH OTOME GAMES.
I can conclude that I DEFINITELY want to finish EVERYONE'S routes in this game, but I'm going to take a break first. Hakuouki is pretty long compared to TMGS3 (let's not talk about Harutoki3, that will take AGES what with all the time travel) so yea... and I know I am definitely going to leave Chikage's route for the last because I know I will cry a river while I play. :(
