2009 American Music Awards
Just finished watching the American Music Awards...
Videos of performances and my small thoughts on some of them behind the cut. No spoilers for awards, though.
Adam. Oh, boy. I was really nervous for his performance, because it's had so much hype (as his entire album has) and it was on a huge stage. I really love the song, and from the pics I'd seen of the rehearsals, it looked like it was gonna be pretty badass.
Here's the thing: First, he needs to work on his conditioning, because his voice sounded pretty crappy after the slow introduction. I attribute that to nerves and lack of conditioning.. he was moving around a LOT up there. I also think that because there were so many "gags" going on (little timing things, tricks, choreography, etc.), that it took his focus away from singing because he had to concentrate on being on his mark or whatever at certain times. They shouldn't have done that for his first big performance, it's just too much.
Second, yeah, I know he's all about pushing the envelope and shocking people and whatever. And I actually liked all the various interactions he had. But at some point, it gets people talking about "stunts" and putting on these little things just to get a reaction. I personally don't care one way or another, and maybe Adam doesn't either, but I just worry about that. Because I don't want to see him get THAT kind of attention, because it'll only come with a negative slant.
Overall, a very disappointing performance from Adam, imo. But I mostly just want to give him a hug, because I bet he was nervous as hell up there.
Otherwise, performances I absolutely LOVED were:
- Kelly Clarkson: She just sounded amazing, plain and simple. Gorgeous song, gorgeous voice.
- Jay Z / Alicia: I will always love any performance of this song. It was the first performance to get everyone up on their feet for the whole thing, and it deserved it.
- Lady Gaga: I'm not a Gaga fan, per se, but she really f'n impressed me with tonight's performance. I give her massive props for balancing the shock value of a performance with the talent and emotion required to draw a viewer in.
- Eminem / 50 Cent: I don't know, I just love Em. I don't know.
- Green Day: Beautiful song, one of my favorites on the album. Billie Joe's a much better vocalist than anyone gives him credit for.
Oh, and Kris looked adorable and odd in his little suit. Talk about nervous! Boy couldn't even look into the camera while he was presenting. lol NOM NOM on his cuteness.
That's it for tonight. I'm trying to post more! My New Year's Resolution is going to be to post once a day, no matter what, and I'm trying to get more used to it early. :)
