Title: Cats to Candy (Sister Oneshot)
Rating: PG
Summary: Reave told him he didn't want to got buy ingredients for dinner. But no. Ree just had to send him out. And make him see that poor cat.

Author's Note:...It was all Ree's fault.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Reave had been walking home. He’d had a decent day, nothing too horrible happened, Ammy raised his paycheck. All was well with the world.

Hmm…I can’t wait to go home and get some sleep.

He walked into their apartment, and a short, lanky boy ran at him wildly. “Reaveee! There’s nothing to cook with!”

Reave’s eye twitched in annoyance.

“I do have a cell phone.”

“Uh, huh!” The boy, only two years younger than Reave, grinned at him, waiting for him to leave.

“No. I’m not going.” Reave absolutely dreaded leaving the house again.

“Yes, I think you are.”

Reave was pushed out the door before he knew it. “Dammit!” He reached into his pocket for his keys, but they were missing.

That little thief! He picked my keys!

Reave groaned as he crossed one of the busier intersections. He turned his head, and saw a cat, frozen in the middle of the road, and a speeding car heading towards it. No one had noticed. He understood what would happen if he didn’t move.

“Crap.” He ran into the street without hesitation.
Crap. Crap. Crap!

One second, he got the cat out of the street, the next second, he was on the concrete, with no knowledge of exactly how he ended up on the ground. And he was bleeding. A lot.

Thanks a lot, Ree. Couldn’t go to the supermarket just this once, could you?
Reave’s eyes slowly closed, and shortly after, he passed out.
-------
Ugh…please not the hospital…

Reave looked around, and saw the absolutely beautiful white walls, felt the uncomfortable bed below him, and heard children crying for their parents.

Ree. You’re going to die.

He glared at the door and hoped. He just hoped that his nurse wasn’t a crazy old lady with a super sized syringe and stared at the door, awaiting his doom.

After a few minutes of staring at the door, and grumbling about nothing in particular, he heard someone knock on the door and immediately looked up, like one of those cute pets, waiting for you to walk up and give them a new home.

“Can I come in?”

Reave was happy.

“Okay.”

Happy because a nurse that didn’t seem outwardly crazy walked into his room.
Reave’s voice, which was deeper than usual, didn’t deter her from opening the door and walking in, a smile on her face. Reave saw her nametag, and saw that she was called Kaede.

Hmm…not a generic name. Nice orange-y hair color. Not too tall or short. I am so lucky today.

Kaede lightly strode across the room to Reave’s bed and picked up the clipboard from the bed’s front, quickly scanning it.

“So, then, Reave, how’re you doing?”

Aww. I like how she says my name too. She looks around my age too~
Wait. Did I just say “Awww”?...

“Good. A lot better, now.”

Muahahah! This is gonna be such a fun hospital stay!

Reave smirked at the thought of all the fun he could have for the next few days, and was getting so caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Kaede staring at him. She continued talking anyway.

“Oh, that’s good. I heard you were suffering from a concussion before, which can make you feel dizzy and impair your thinking a bit. Don’t worry, it’ll pass.” Kaede looked down at the clipboard.

Reave was still too happy for his own good that he would be in the hospital.

“Oh, but my thinking isn’t being impaired.”
Kaede seemed to be losing her ‘calm nurse’ exterior.

“I see. How does your arm feel, and your leg? Do you need any painkillers?”

Hmmm? She thinks knocking me out with pain killers will do something?
Reave laughed inwardly.

“No, no, you’re good enough.”

Heh. Inner Reave says you’re not leaving this room unscarred. Or at least, not with the same impression of me as when you walked in.

Reave smirked again. A very evil one.

“Reave, don’t mess around. Are you sick, or should I go check on the other patients?”

Oooh. Girl’s got bite. Hmm…I wonder if I should talk to her normally or not. But maybe I shouldn’t. It is way too fun to mess with her. Hmm…Maybe it’s bad to think like this all the time? And it might be a bit bad for me to be talking to myself like this all the time. Oh. She’s staring at me…Have I been blankly staring at her this whole monologue? Stupid, Reave! Stupid!

“Reave?”

“Oh, sorry. So, does the cute nurse in the striped apron have a name?”
Geh. Why’d I ask that? She has a name tag on.

“My name is Kaede.”

Why is she looking down at herself?! Does she think I’m just stupid now for not noticing the name tag?!

“Pretty-”
“Thank you.”
Geh. She cut me off…fine be that way Candycane.

“-but I think Ms. Candycane is more appropriate, no? Or, maybe Fireball to match your flamin’ hair?”

Kaede wrapped one of her ponytails around her finger, playing with her hair.
So cute!
Oh no. I did not just think that.

Reave was just going crazy in his own head. It might have been the concussion. Nobody knows.

“Oh wow, I never heard that one before. Wow, Reave, you’re so amazing.” Kaede still had her smile on, but her voice dripped with sarcasm.

“I know, I know, no need to be jealous. Although, you’re not so bad yourself. Although your standing way over there is really intimidating. You should come sit down next to me.”

Reave internally pumped his fist when she did. No matter how hesitant she seemed to be.

Even Reave wasn’t sure what he was doing at this point, especially when he sat up and touched Kaede’s cheek with his good hand.

“W-what are you doing?”

“You’re really pretty, you know?” Reave smiled. A true smile this time, not a smirk, or a quirking of the lips, just a real smile.

“T-thank you.”

I like this girl…she’s not trying to impress me like those other losers.

“Especially when you blush, makes you look cute.”

At this, Kaede seemed to wake up, gently yet sternly pushed Reave’s hand away, and gave him a scolding look.

“Reave, you’re a patient, you’re sick, and you need to lay down, okay. You’re probably just acting like this because you hit your head or something, so just sleep it off and everything will be good.”

Kaede seemed to be having an inner conflict at ‘everything being good’.

“Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong, Candycane. I feel just fine right now, better than ever. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you’re only pushing me away because you don’t want to admit you like me.”

Reave is very good at reading people, especially since Kaede seemed to be staring
at him again.

He smirked on purpose this time, and very sexily.

“O-oh? Prove it.”

Reave didn’t falter. “You’re still holding my hand.” He squeezed her hand to prove it.

“O-oh, I… I um-”

“Listen, Kae, don’t worry. I mean, I know I’m irresistible, and you’re not so bad yourself. In fact…”

At this, Reave leaned forward until they were millimeters apart, and brushed his lips against hers. It was only for a second and Reave moved back against the bed with a smile.

“W-what?” Kaede placed her hand - the other still holding Reave’s - on her mouth.

“Hmm… You don’t taste much like a candy cane, but I’ll get over it.”

Yes. All is right with the world.

“Oh? What makes you think you’ll get a chance to kiss me again?” Kaede seemed to have gained back her confidence, but it didn’t stop Reave.

“Are you going to stop me?” He challenged.

“Hmm… how about a compromise? If all goes well you’re getting released tomorrow, so, how about after my shift we meet outside and I’ll show you what it’s really like to be kissed.”

Please agree. I’ll be mad if you don’t. I’m even pouting in my own head! Pleaaaase!
God, I sound like Ree.

“Oh, is this a challenge?”
That means yes right?!

“You could call it that. I’d rather call it a date, though.”

“Ooooh, bad nurse, taking advantage of the sick.”

“Hm. Reave?”

“Yeah?”

Kaede surprised Reave by giving him a kiss to match the earlier one. He quickly got over his surprise and acted like he expected it, he didn’t let her escape. Of course, Kaede didn’t seem to be complaining. They only broke free of each other when they heard footsteps approaching, and Kaede was very quick to switch into nurse-mode.

“Ehm, so Reave, here are your painkillers, be sure to take one every 4 hours, and if you need anything just hit the call button- Oh, hello Francesca.” As Kaede placed the pills on the table, the woman called Francesca walked into the room, not questioning why the bed looked so messy.

Reave just seemed to look a bit blank, amazed that things even turned out the way they did, and overjoyed because of it.

“Hello dear, how’re you holding out? He’s not giving you no trouble, is he?”

Reave and Kaede just smiled knowingly, “Nope ma’am, none at all.”

---------

The same night, with the hospital quiet and visiting hours over, Reave had one last happy thought before he got to sleep.

Ree, I owe you a lot of cake and ice cream for this.
