~.: I'm not sure if I can stand to sit through very many more episodes of Utena. But I really really want to finish watching the series before I watch the movie for my thesis. I hate watching movies without having seen the series first. D: I'm getting really sick of the same songs playing over and over and over and over though. And they're not ( Read more... )

BTW your icon is very cute :-)
Yeah...Utena is kind of a brain-breaking series, especially with the theme songs. I had a friend explain it all to me as we marathoned it over a few weeks, so I had help :-P Ultimately I enjoyed it, but yeah, the theme songs get to be a bit much. I can tell you more about Utena if you'd like to make the process less painful :-P FYI the movie is pretty much the series with some more emphasis on certain thematic element. Still, you definitely want the series behind it so the movie can make more sense :-P And you are totally allowed to skip the stuff they repeat: they only change them a few times when big things are about to happen. :-) And there are at least one or two episodes you can skip without losing anything central to the story.

Yeah, I'm beginning to realize that. I just started on the Black Rose Arc, so I've got a long way to go. :x I'm hoping to be done with it before the end of tomorrow so that I can watch the movie and start/finish watching the other ones I need.

Good call. Best of luck with all of that!

What's your thesis on again?

Sexuality in anime- how it's expressed and how accurately it depicts Japanese thinking about sex and sexuality.

Ahh that's right. Utena is a good one for that, definitely! Anything else you'll be watching and analyzing?

No, not sex specifically. She's looking at references to sexuality and analogies and such. Right?

Basically all anime does. o.o When you're looking for it, it's definitely there. Random panty shots? Girls with watermelons in their shirts? Gender-switching? Really pretty boys? Hey, why are those girls holding hands? Yeah, that's all sexuality. That's what I'm looking at.

Yeah. Why does everyone automatically think fornication when I say sexuality?? Most of it's subtle, depending on which genre and series you're looking at. If I used something that had blatant sex in it that would kinda defeat my purpose of seeing how accurately all or most aspects of Japanese sexuality were portrayed.

I know Sarah already got to this and I indirectly replied, but I'll do it again.

If you're talking explicit sex, then no, none of them do. But sexuality is more than sex. ^^;
