Fun returns to stupidity

Oh, finally, some fun in the stupidity. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was a genuinely fun movie. I ended up leaving the cinema with a smile on my face and spring in my step. In comparison, I was exhausted after watching Pirates: AWE. I was downright depressed after seeing Spider-man 3. FF:RotSS is by far the best summer popcorner so far ( Read more... )

Wow!

I expected the silver surfer film to be universally hated. I shook my head throughout and if it had been a DVD would have turned it off. Half of the characters effects are low-rent for 2007 - Cant they make the Thing look like he's made of rocks rather than latex? Surely glueing real rocks onto a suit with orange paint on the top would do it. And all the rubber effects are really cheap and nasty. At least they treated Chickless's voice a bit more this time though.

I thought the script was a CLUNKER! My favourite bit was

'so we need to take his board away from him'
'Yes, he'll be like a fish in a net'

WHAAAAAAAT?

All the military throwing their weight around stuff and double crossing went to the cliche graveyard in about '87.

You're right, it was Saturday morning cartoon stuff and maybe better that, than the crybaby 'relationships' chick-flick that Spiderman was, and I loved most of the Silver Surfer stuff (they should have bit the bullet and gave him his own film) but on the whole it just felt like a duffer all the way through for me.

Maybe they will give him his own film, since they included the ubiquitous 'ooh, he might not actually be dead' bit during the end credits...

I thought that. Perhaps they weren't confident enough to just put out a Silver Surfer film but tested the water with a team-up/Vs.

Celebrity endorsement from Joe Satriani was not enough, I fear.

I suppose it's all about expectation. I expected to see a 30¢ Marvel comic book on screen, and that's what I saw. The baggage the goes with it is positive (stupid, fun, lighthearted) and negative (stupid, illogical, wafer thin), but it hit the target square-on to my mind. If people can commend Sin City for capturing the ambiance of Miller's ultra-noir comic book, then the same can be said for this, which (like the first F4) soundly captured the Technicolour Zap/Pow of the F4 comics/cartoons.

And they recycled a joke from the first movie, where the punchline was "Jessica Alba gets naked".

Genius.

If they ever do a FF film without this joke in it, I will demand my money back
