So... Star Wars: The Clone Wars, eh?
There's been a lot of sniffyness about The Clone Wars for three reasons:
- It is Star Wars, and this isn’t 1981
- It is aimed at a younger audience than the films
- It is ostensibly a pilot for the TV show.
In the light of that, I'll admit to having some pretty big reservations by the time it came around... And despite it all, I really enjoyed it. Yes, it's flawed (but not as flawed as the first two prequels), but still pretty darned good.
There was a real tonal incongruity between some obvious 'kiddy cartoon'-ness (comedy slapstick droids, smart talking 14 year old sidekick) and some of the most brutal war scenes we've ever seen in any Star Wars film which was was odd, but I had a great time... and despite it being kinda light on plot, it sure was extremely pretty to look at. It takes a while to get used to the "Tartakovsky meets Thunderbirds") vibe, but once you do, it's thoroughly fun.
A few niggles (Ziro the Hutt' - a character taken out of director Dave Filoni's hands and
personally ruined by George Lucas it seems, the use of an electric guitar at one point, slightly off lip sync), but overall very well 'shot' action scenes, Anakin was far more likeable and expressive and the hyper-real look was staggering on occasion.
It may be Star Wars junior, but based on this, I'll definitely watch the TV series.
Now... Roll on The Force Unleashed and the grown up (well... as grown up as Star Wars can get) stuff (demo on Xbox Live and whatever Playstation uses from Thursday).
See y'all at the G.
