I tried to get my mother's family to stop giving gifts this year. There were some murmurs of assent from the women in the family, but they were hard to hear over the sound of the husbands shouting me down. They all want to appear the most generous of my grandmother's sons, but really they just want those gift checks my grandfather hands out every year.
