Mean FanMix Vol. 1 (General Hospital

Dec 21, 2010 13:09

This one's kind of a strange beast. It is a fanmix for General Hospital, but includes original characters. It's basically an alternate future look at General Hospital, exploring the aftermath of Jason and Elizabeth's stupid decision to keep their son's paternity a secret.

Or, rather, I should say, the fanmix doesn't explore that. The fanmix is based on a fic that explores that. The grown-up version of Jake, their son, is played by Benjamin McKenzie from The OC. All songs, lyric bits, links to the zip and additional art after the cut, which is under the album covers.

Front Cover // Large
Back Cover // Large

(Cast information)

Jake's brother Cameron is played by Jared Padalecki
Jake's girlfriend, also Johnny Zacchara's daughter, Amalia, is played by Megan Fox
Johnny Zacchara is still played by Brandon Barash
Jake's friend, Cameron's girlfriend, and Alexis and Ric's daughter Molly is played by Rachel Bilson
Jake's best friend, and Sonny and Carly's son Morgan is played by whatshisface from the OC.

Heh. Had to blur out an identifying username on the back cover there. :P Let's move on with the songs. Zip link WAY at the bottom.

1. Why Are You So Mean To Me? // Nada Surf

You tell Mom, I'll break your neck;
She's already a nervous wreck.
(. . .)
Why are you so mean to me?
You'll regret, eventually.

* This song inspired the title of the story.
* Though Cameron and Jake never had an antagonistic relationship like AJ and Jason, two other brothers with different fathers, the first two lines of this song help me set the tone for writing about Jake keeping this secret and wanting it to remain a secret.

2. Lean On Me // Bill Withers

Lean on me
When you're not strong,
And I'll be your friend,
I'll help you carry on.

* What I like about Port Charles is that it's a small, sleepy, stupid little town where everyone knows each other whether they like it or not. People grow up in the same neighborhoods and raise kids and those kids grow up and get married and it's all good, familiar, incestuous fun. That's why it was so realistic for me to have Sonny and Carly and Patrick and Robin and Jason and Elizabeth and Johnny and Nadine and AJ and Alexis and Ric and Nikolas's kids all grow up together and be friends.

* If I had more room in this story to branch out (and I totally don't, because it's too wide as it is) I'd delve more into how the kids interact. In this story, we only ever see them banding together to protect Jake. I would show, for example, how they all banded together to help Cecily deal with her eating disorder, for example, or how they all banded together to sneak Amalia out of her overprotective father's roof every once in a while to actually have a life of her own, and so on. But alas, no time, no room. So no one will ever know of Cecily's eating disorder.

3. Teenage Wasteland // The Who

The exodus is here
The happy ones are near
Let's get together,
Before we get much older.
Teenage wasteland,
It's only teenage wasteland.
They're all wasted!

* Is there any better song for adolescence?

* In my head, I imagine that the guitar solo in the beginning of this song was the very first piece that Mal learned how to play on his guitar. Noah helped him, with what he learned from his days as Eli Love.

* I love the image of Jake and Cameron as teenagers, the men of the house, really coming into themselves. Cameron went one way, and Jake went another.

4. Stop and Stare // OneRepublic

This town is colder now,
I think it's sick of us.
It's time to make our move,
I'm shaking off the rust.
I've got my heart set
On anywhere but here.

* As he gets older and continues living with the secret, I imagine that Jake really feels like it's crushing him. Everywhere he looks, it's a reminder of his mother, Jason, himself, Cameron, and the life they could have had but never will.

* When Jake leaves Port Charles for Yale, he's taking part of it with him because Morgan is attending the university, too, but he's still shedding it away, getting rid of it, breaking free from that suffocating little town. His first time truly away from home is the crucial point where it all comes into focus for him: what he's here to accomplish, and what he'll do when he returns home with his credentials.

* The lyrics are just so beautiful, I wanted to quote the whole song. It really speaks to a sense of loneliness, frustration, and confusion about what you think you want and what you really need. Parts of it are almost a prayer.

*Don't you love the image? It's Jake looking away from his reflection in a bathroom mirror. Took me forever to get it right.

5. Lose Yourself // Eminem

Look, if you had one shot,
Or one opportunity,
To seize everything you ever wanted - one moment,
Would you capture it? Or just let it slip?
(. . .)
Success is my only mother-fucking option;
Failure's not.
Mom, I love you, but this trailer's got to go,
I cannot grow old in Salem's lot,
So here I go as my shot,
Feet, fail me not,
This may be the only opportunity that I got.

* The raw determination and anger of Jake Morgan. Eminem was a perfect, perfect fit.

* This song had to be on this album because the sentiment rings so true for Jake. He knows what he could have had if Jason hadn't walked away from their family. He would have had a dad, Cameron would have had a dad, Elizabeth would have been happy, and she wouldn't have to work so hard all her life and sometimes cry herself to sleep at night worrying about how she was going to make the rent. He knows what he could have had, and now he's out to get it, no matter the cost, knowing full well that it will upset his mother.

* LOVE this mini-banner. I added a bruise/cut to Jake's cheek. You can kind of see it. I love how the stuff inside the house is all warm and goldeny and Jake is standing outside in the dark, in bluish tones. Love it, love it.

6. Best Of You // Foo Fighters

I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
No, I refuse

* I love the anger and energy of this song.

* I like to think that everything Jake did, especially in his teenage years, while he was keeping the secret, was colored by Jason. Subconsciously, without even realizing it, he asked himself what Jason would do in a given situation and did that. He proved himself to be smart and resourceful just like his father, but he always took it one step further than Jason would have, which was what baffled and scared Jason and Elizabeth so much. Jake wasn't satisfied to just stop where his father did: because he didn't stop, because he went further, he was able to tell Jason (and believe it) that he (Jake) was nothing like him. When in reality, they were just two sides of the same coin.

* I like the way the banner came out. At first I thought it was kind of dumb looking, Jason super-imposed and faded over Jake's heart, both of them anguished and frustrated, but it's definitely grown on me.

7. Fire Eye'd Boy // Broken Social Scene

Until the day you die, you'll always admit
That you were right, you were right
About all those things
Fire eyed boy, give em all the slip

* If there's one thing we know about Jake Webber, it's that he's stubborn. And he always believes he's right, at least while he's doing whatever it is that he thinks is right. He might think later that it was a mistake, but at the time, he is convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it's the rightest thing ever.

* He really is a fire eyed boy, isn't he? Look at those gorgeous eyes.

* I still chortle at how Jake effectively 'gave them all the slip' throughout this story. Don't you? Okay, maybe it's just me. Fair enough.

8. Our Song // Taylor Swift

Our song is the slam of screen doors,
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real low
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know

* Aw, teenage Jake and Amalia. This song is definitely more from Amalia's point of view.

* The fact that the couple in this song don't have a 'song' that they can associate with their love equates to how Jake refuses to name his and Amalia's love by calling it 'love,' and how he can't bring himself to use solid terms like that, just seeing how solid words like 'love' and solid acts like engagements and even marriages ruined every last chance for happiness that the adults in his life (Elizabeth, Lucky, Leo, Jason) had.

* They kind of have a mild Romeo and Juliet thing going, don't they? Elizabeth was very relieved when she found out - or thought she found out, aka, Jake was lying - that Jake and Lia weren't serious because she didn't want her son involved with a mob princess, and Papa Zacchara had to drag Jake out of his daughter's closet God only knows how many times, and then Elizabeth scared him by telling him that Jake used condoms, so he DEFINITELY didn't want that boy in his house, much less his daughter's bed...

* How pretty is Megan Fox? These pictures are generally from before she massively jacked up her face, though. Post boob-job, some minor surgery. But before she really went crazy with it.

9. Dark Blue // Jack's Mannequin

This flood (this flood) is slowly rising up
Swallowing the ground beneath my feet,
Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition so
I'll swim (I'll swim) as the water rises up,
The sun is sinking down
And now all I can see are the planets in a row
Suggesting it's best that I slow down
This night's a perfect shade of
Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room
Well I'm here with you

* SUCH a pretty song. The lead vocalist is the guy from Something Corporate. This is his side project group.

* During his late teenage years, I like to think that Jake came to realize how much he needed Amalia and how much he l-ved her. Not that he'd ever say the word, naturally. But he truly realized how much he depended on her, and what a calming effect she had on him. And he began to think more and more about what it was that he gave her that kept her with him, too.

10. Love Lockdown // Kanye West

I'm not loving you
The way I wanted to
What I had to do,
Had to run from you

* I wanted the banner to look just as sparse as the song is.

* Jake and Amalia would have worked for this banner, too, because he refuses to say the word 'love' to her and feels he isn't loving her right and is really self-deprecating in that respect, but I liked Jason/Jake for the banner better.

* Yes, I know the song is about lovers. The song is more importantly about tamping down one's emotions, and that works for Jake in regards to both Jason and Amalia. Heck, even Elizabeth, but that's later on in the story and wouldn't have worked here, since at this point he still thinks Elizabeth hung the moon.

11. Swagger Like Us // T.I. feat. Jay-Z

Gangsta shit hereditary,
Got it from my dad.
Flow colder than February
With extraordinary swag.
No one on the corner have swagga like us.

* Jake is such a cocky bastard.

* Is it wrong that I find the image of Jason OR Jake being dragged into the PCPD and the other one there to see it go down incredibly hot?
I have problems, you guys.

12. Mack the Knife // Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin

Oh, the shark has pretty teeth dear
And he shows em, pearly white
Just a jack knife has macheath dear
And he keeps it way out of sight

* EEE! Godfather Jake! Godfather Jake!

* I love the image of old-timey gangsters back in the '50s. They're so classy. You know, for thieving bloodthirsty drains on society.

* Jake = shark. You know it to be true.

13. Pictures of You // The Last Goodnight

Pictures of you,
Pictures of me,
Remind us all of what we used to be.

* Took me forever to get that pic of Liz and the babies right.

* Mama Webber sure births beautiful boys, huh?

* God, I love this song. I made a Mean promo to this song, too. You can check out the YouTube channel, soloensemblearchive, or look in this forum for the thread to check it out.

14. Time To Pretend // MGMT

This is our decision, To live fast and die young.
We've got the vision,
Now let's have some fun.
Yeah, it's overwhelming,
But what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices,
And wake up for the morning commute?

* One of my favorite songs ever.

* How HOT is Ben McKenzie? YOW.

* This is the theme song of Jake's LIFE, you guys. I firmly believe that if he didn't have Cameron and Amalia in his life, he'd die young, drunk, and coked and sexed out.
