CHAPTER SIXTEEN: Everything Is Exposed!

"What are you doing, Conan?" Ayumi asked, leaning over the miniature detective's shoulder.

He was busily tapping away at his phone, scanning through search results at a speed too fast to comprehend.

"What's he looking at, Ayumi?" Mitsuhiko asked her.

"It looks like online ordering stores," Ayumi said.

"Are you price comparing, Conan?" Mitsuhiko asked.

"Price comparing? What's that?" Genta asked.

"It's when you look on the net to see if there are lower prices online than in the store," Mitsuhiko explained. "It helps people to keep from getting ripped off."

"I'm not price comparing," Conan said. "I'm looking at online stores. If one of them has stocked a lot of new merchandise in the last few days, then maybe they're the ones who took the figures. Aha!"

Takagi turned his attention on the kids as Conan exclaimed his triumph. "Did you find something, Conan-kun?" he asked. He had spent enough time around the amazingly precocious little boy to trust his instincts. He often thought that maybe they should recruit the kid as a permanent member of the police force. Well, if there weren't child labor laws.

"Yeah," Conan said. "See, look." He passed his cell phone to Takagi. "Most of their merchandise just came in stock a few days ago."

"Th-this site is in English!" Takagi exclaimed. "Satou-san, can you...?"

"Tanakazu Anime Warudo," she sounded out. "It looks like they mostly sell novelty goods to Americans and other foreigners."

Conan just grinned. "I looked at the address. They're not very far from this area."

Czes shook his head. "Oh great. Can we call a cab this time?"

--

"So, Claire," Luck said, casually, as he approached his adoptive brother. The other Camorra took one glance at the look on Luck's face and decided that they did not want to get along. The smile on Luck's face might be pleasant, but the look in his eyes certainly wasn't. "I thought I'd ask you a couple of questions about your trip to Yokohama?"

Claire - who was busily slurping up his udon - looked up from the table and said, "Sure. Sit down."

Luck sat across from the redhead. "I thought we said to keep a low profile," Luck said. "I don't know about you, but throwing someone off of a train doesn't seem like a low profile to me."

Claire let the udon drop from his chopsticks. It made a plop in the soup. "But he shot me," Claire said, pouting. "Fair's only fair."

Luck regarded him evenly.

Claire shrugged. "He put a hole in my favorite suit! What was I supposed to do? Stand back and take it?"

Luck shook his head. "What were you doing on top of the bullet train in the first place?" he asked.

"Checking out that Kaitou Kid character," Claire said. "But don't worry, I don't think he's a threat."

"I'm glad to hear that," Luck deadpanned. "Why the bullet train though?"

"He was the one who jumped up there first," Claire said. "Look, what's done is done. They blamed it all on Isaac anyways, and he's not keeping a low profile."

Luck gave Claire a blank look. "What do you mean?"

"Oh, they're out sightseeing today," Claire said. "Czes messaged Ennis a couple of hours ago."

"...What?! Who let them outside? They're supposed to stay with that batty professor!"

Claire shrugged. "Don't ask me."

Luck had already left the table, and was walking toward the other Camorra. "Where's Ennis and Firo?" he demanded.

--

Isaac and Miria leaned out the windows on both sides of the cab. "Wooow, Isaac! Tokyo has some huge buildings!"

"It sure does. What do you reckon these buildings are bigger than in New York?"

"No way! New York has huge buildings!"

"But these Japanese are known for stealing stuff here in the Orient. Maybe they stole the idea for big buildings."

"Oh Isaac! That's terrible!"

Czes, who was in the middle seat, put his head in his hands. "Every city has tall buildings," he said. "They're probably just offices."

Isaac and Miria didn't listen. Czes glared at Conan, who was snickering in the front seat, all the way until they pulled up in front of an apartment building. 「Thank you, Mr. Cab Driver!」 He paid the cab driver with the money that Satou and Takagi had given him, and then hopped out, Isaac, Miria and Czes not far behind. Satou, Takagi and the Detective Club were already waiting.

「Alright!」 Genta exclaimed. 「Let's go catch the badguys and get Toya's figure back!」

「Now, now,」 Conan said. 「We don't know if they're the ones who were stealing.」

「Well, shall we?」 Satou asked. Takagi followed her inside, and they headed for the elevators. 「Now let's see, the address was on the... sixth floor, I believe.」

The two of them were quickly pressed to the back of the elevator as all of the Detective Boys, plus Isaac and Miria and Czes and Toya, all crammed into the elevator.

「I feel like we're on the subway,」 Takagi muttered.

Satou readjusted herself in an attempt to get comfortable. 「Only there's nobody to push us inside,」 she said.

Eventually, they reached the sixth floor and all piled out of the elevator. Takagi and Satou led the way to the apartment and knocked on the door. After several moments of waiting, the door opened to reveal a skinny young man - probably in his twenties - wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants. 「Can I help you?」 he asked.

「Ah, yes,」 Takagi said. 「I'm Detective Takagi and this is Detective Satou, and we were wondering if we might look around your apartment.」

「Oh, yeah, sure,」 the man said. 「I'm Tanaka. As you can see, there are a lot of fragile figurines, so please be careful.」 He looked meaningfully at the various children standing outside the door of the apartment.

"Maybe you two should wait out here," Czes said to Isaac and Miria.

"Right!" Miria said, and she and Isaac gave identical salutes.

"Of course we will wait here for you, little Czes!" Isaac exclaimed.

"Right," Czeslaw muttered, before following the Detective Boys into the apartment. They had only gone a little ways in when Toya let out a noise of surprise. 「Ah! It's my figure!」 He reached up and pulled the Kamen Yaiba Mystery Form figurine off of the shelf that it was on.

「Hey!」 Tanaka said. 「That's not yours! Be careful with it!」

Conan glanced over sharply at the figure. There was something about it... 「Hey, mister,」 he said, in his best child-voice. 「These are pretty rare! But are you selling them all to America?」

「Ah, yeah,」 Tanaka said. 「I have a business partner in America who is bilingual, so he made the website.」

「Woow,」 Conan replied. 「You must sell a lot of figures, because these are pretty rare! Where did you get them all?」

「Well, I had a pretty large collection,」 Tanaka replied. 「But I started buying them from around, so I could sell them overseas.」

「I see,」 Conan said. He picked up a figure. 「Is this one new?」

「Yeah, it is,」 Tanaka said. 「But how did you know?」

「There's no dust around his feet,」 Conan said. 「See? Around the other ones, there's some dust, but this one doesn't have any. But it's really amazing, mister, that you managed to get this figure. It was a special edition figurine from five years ago!」

Tanaka looked surprised. 「H-how did you know that?」 he asked.

Conan shrugged. He had been a fan of the detective anime several years ago, but he wasn't going to tell this guy that. Instead, Takagi took over. 「Do you mind if we look into where you purchased these figurines?」 he asked.

「Y-yeah, sure,」 Tanaka said. 「I have some receipts here. I'm afraid my filing isn't that great, so...」 He reached up to a file that was hanging on the wall and pulled out several bills of sale. Conan ignored those, and went over to the Kamen Yaiba Mystery Version figure that Toya had been looking at. He picked it up and carefully examined the figure from all angles. A grin crossed his face.

「Don't worry about those just yet, Takagi,」 he said. 「He's definitely the guy we're looking for.」

「Wh-what?」 Tanaka demanded. 「I didn't steal these figurines! I promise, I bought all of them.」

「No, this figurine is definitely Toya's. Look at the feet and the bottom of the cape - there are little flecks of green paint still there.」 Conan held up the figure to show them the green paint at the bottom. 「Toya's father made and painted the shelf for this doll. When I looked at the shelf, there were a bunch of little cracks - the paint must have come off on this Yaiba Doll while it was still wet.」

「No, no, little boy,」 Tanaka said. 「The store that I bought that figure from was doing some remodeling. The paint must have gotten on it then.」

「I don't think so,」 Conan said. 「Toya's father manages a hardware store, where they mix paint. He mixed the paint that he used to paint Toya's shelf. I bet that there isn't any other color like the one that's on this Yaiba doll.」

Toya's eyes went wide at this declaration. 「My figure!」 he exclaimed.

Conan grinned and handed it over. Takagi took a surprised look at the miniature detective, and then turned to the man in the t-shirt, who was sweating nervously. 「Well, Mr. Tanaka?」 he asked.

Mr. Tanaka hung his head.

Czes looked over at Conan and raised his eyebrow, impressed. He pulled his phone from his pocket as it vibrated with a message from Ennis.

--

Rum hung up his cell phone after his quick talk with the FBI, when a long blond-haired man walked over toward him. Rum froze up. Even without his gruff-looking, gorilla-like partner, this man terrified him. He might have a codename of his own, but he would never, ever be a match for Gin.

"So," Gin said, in his deep and intimidating voice. "How are the FBI these days?"

"Th-the FBI?" Rum squeaked. "I don't know what you're talking about, Gin."

Gin pulled his gun from beneath his coat and cocked it. The silencer was already screwed on. Rum took a deep gulp and said goodbye to his last moments of life. "Oh, those FBI," he said.

Gin smiled. "Good, you remember," he said. "Now then..."

"Are you going to kill me?" Rum asked. Oh how did he ever get involved in this stupid operation?

"I would love to kill you," Gin said. Rum shivered. "But That Person wants you alive."

Despite the reprieve, Rum didn't think it prudent to breathe a sigh of relief just yet. When their boss wanted something, that usually wasn't the correct reaction. "What does the boss want?" he asked, nervously.

"You're the first person in years who has been close to the FBI," Gin said. "We want you to spy on them, just like you're spying on us."

Rum gulped. "I'm not spy--"

"Don't play dumb," Gin said. "Unless you're really that naive. You've been given a second chance, Rum. Don't waste it."

"Yes, Gin," Rum said, forlornly.

Gin nodded. "Good," he said. "But one step out of line, and--" He glanced down at his gun, which was pressed up against Rum's chest. Rum followed his eyes nervously. And then without warning Gin whirled around and walked away.

Rum sank to the ground, trying not to shiver.

--

Czes and the Detective Boys walked out of the apartment first, the Detective Boys talking about the outcome of the case. As it turned out, Tanaka had stolen almost half of his wares. Takagi and Satou were upstairs, handcuffing him right at the moment. Isaac and Miria were trailing behind him, noisily asking about what had happened with the case. Czeslaw mostly ignored them, in favor of looking down the street.

What he saw nearly caused him to put his head in his hands in frustration.

He'd thought Ennis was asking for his location to check up on him, not to actually come find him. But there they were, a huge group of Camorra, heading straight toward them. Czes shot them a look of annoyance as they began to head straight toward him. He excused himself to the Detective Boys and jogged towards them. Isaac and Miria, apparently, decided it was the best idea to follow him.

"What are you doing here?" Czeslaw hissed at them. "There are cops here!"

"Picking them up," Luck said, quite deadpan. "In case you've forgotten, they're on the run. What are they doing with cops around, anyways?"

"I have the situation under control," Czes snapped at them. He glared up at the other Camorra, not for the first time cursing his height. "You guys... just go somewhere else for the moment!"

"Fine, but we're taking them with us," Luck said.

"Done," Czeslaw replied. He was glad to get rid of the duo, anyways. Czes returned to the Detective Boys, his look daring them to say anything, as the entire group of Camorra piled into a convenience store and began browsing, to the attendant's horror.

Takagi and Satou finally came out of the building, a handcuffed Tanaka in front of them. 「We have to take him down to the station,」 Satou said. 「But I called a cab for you guys. Just wait here, OK?」

「OK,」 the Detective Boys said. They were still staring at the plethora of people inside of the convenience store in amazement.

「Don't worry, Detective Takagi, Detective Satou,」 Conan said. 「We'll get home alright.」

「OK,」 Satou said. 「Where are your aunt and uncle?」 This she addressed at Czes.

「They decided to do more sightseeing,」 Czes said with a cute smile.

After saying their goodbyes, they put Tanaka in the back seat of their car and drove away.

「There sure are a lot of people in that convenience store,」 Takagi said, as they pulled away.

「I wonder if they're from some local business,」 Satou mused. 「Well, that case definitely wasn't connected to Isaac and Miria.」

Takagi sighed. Back to business as usual, then.

Inside of the convenience store, a blond pair started sneezing.

NEXT TIME: The Trap Is Set For Katiou Kid! The Showdown Begins...

"Oooh, who's setting the trap, Isaac?"

"I think it might be the police, Miria."

"The police? But what if it's not that kind of trap?"

"What other kind of traps are there?"

"I don't know, Isaac. What kind are there?"

"Well, my dear, there are mouse traps and big holes in the ground..."

"But I thought only we got caught in those, Isaac."

"Well, maybe it's a burglar alarm! He is a thief, after all."

"Maybe you're right, Isaac!"
