So, another year and another trip to Manitowabing. This year though, we decided to go a little later in the summer, and try to get some warmer weather. It worked!!

Friday we waited for Amy to get off work with anticipation. When we were finally off, it felt like such a load off. On the road at night, heading north towards Parry Sound, feels very freeing. When we got to Parry Sound we got a little turned around (or so we thought) and the OPP thought we were avoiding a R.I.D.E. program (which we didnt even see!) and we were stopped!! Ha, how hilarious that he realised we were just a little lost, gave us simple directions and we were off. To finally arrive at Lake Manitowabing, at Jer's family cottage...at around 200 am. Got high, I started to drink...then around 4 am we all went to bed. Not to sleep of course.
Saturday. Overcast and windy. Not too bad though, it gave us a day to do inside things, like play scatagories. Amy won two games, Sylvie one, and Jer and I tied for first on the last game. We ate a lot. We did go for a swim that day, and the water was actually really nice. All in all a nice lazy day without sun. Later in the night it rained, and it decided to dump on Jer and I while we were walking. Jer found a moose head barometer and set it up by the door so we would know if it was going to rain on us all weekend. Needless to say, it read "rain" for the rest of the weekend.
Sunday. Damn moose head could not have been more wrong. What a beautiful day!! Jer and I were up at 530am after three and a half hours of sleep, just because I wanted to fish at dawn. It was rough getting up (more for Jer) but pretty soon we were on a boat on the lake, fighting the current made by the windy morning. We made it to a nice calmer inlet with a beaver dam in it. Pretty far from the cottage and our dock. We fished there for a couple of hours, with nothing but a slight few nibbles on Jer's part. Once my hook was caught on something indefinitely, we cut the line and headed home. Man was that the tough part, the current was trying to suck us downriver while we were fighting to cross it..took us a while to get back for breakfast. After a hearty breakfast and some tears shed over the lack of fish brought home, we went for a swim. I encompass the wind/air element. On a quick drive to the town store, everyone was telling me to do something about the lack of sun and overcast sky. I seriously tried to will it to happen, and less than two hours later, we had clear sunny skies. Nice and hot with NO humidity, was a beautiful day. I realised at lunch that the girls were already becoming drunk..so I figured I had to play catchup! Drank like a fish that afternoon and hung out in the sun a tad too much, got a burn. My afternoon nap happened after Sylvie served the watermelon that had been soaking in Liquor for a while...I almost passed out on an innertube. I woke up later and felt like crappity crap. Oh, somewhere in there Amelia caught a bass with a NET! So Jer and I were somewhat out to prove we could still catch fish. We bought worms and did some fishing at dusk. Steven actually caught a friggin fish!! It was maybe 5 inches long, so not big enough to keep. He fell off the hook and I set him free. I stopped fishing then, realising I didnt want to remove the hooks from whatever I catch. But still..I caught a goddam fish! Sunday ended with most of us feeling wiped out. I passed out cold!
Monday. Ah the recup day. After we ate breakfast I really realised that while drunk I had twisted my left ankle pretty badly, and gotten three slivers...get this..in the bottom center of my right foot. While drunk I had not given a shit. Now, with dock slivers in my foot, I was worried about infection. I did something I never wanted to do, nor wish on anyone. I used a scalpel to cut slivers out of the bottom of my foot! And in all honestly, it wasnt as bad as I thought it was so surely going to be! Monday was pure laziness. People napping and slowly cleaning up so it took all day! Jer went on a canoe trip. I tried to deal with my sunburn. We ate and smoked and packed, all leisurly and without care. Eventually it was time to leave. This year we decided to leave later to hopefully beat traffic, and it worked very well. Leaving at 10pm works wonders!
There is something wonderful and magical about that spot, and twice now I have had to leave it and felt ripped away from something I need to have in my life. I hope to go back, anytime. Someday I hope to go and not come back here. I can recount the events of our weekend, but I will never be able to explain how they felt.

Here is to my good friends, and the place we connect and wish we could call home.
