Three Things Seattle-ites Don't Like to Spend Money On:
Parking. Everyone is in love with their car, and everyone seems to expect to park it for cheap. Even with $3/gallon gas, people still drive around the block, hoping to win the lotto finding an open parking space. One promoter told us attendance to his events increases by 15% when he places them at venues with free parking. Seems that people will pay $30 to see the show, but not $4 to park the car.
I didn't bring my car with me to Seattle, and wow do I really miss the freedom of GOING places. If the jetta was here with me, I would probably do the same damn thing ... drive around for 30 minutes until I'm late, and then give into paying $5 an hour.
Cover Charges. Seattle's threshold seems to be about $10; north of this, and people grumble. This isn't LA. Consider the business logic of cover charges: "We're going to charge you a fee to get into our club, just so you have the opportunity to spend more money on food and drinks." Actually, cover charges act as a price discriminator, like a country club membership fee, keeping out those who can't pay it, so supposedly, you're rubbing elbows with a better crowd.
We'll talk about this when I'm 21. It's true, though.
Umbrellas and Sun Glasses. Umbrellas are for wimps, used by transplants. Heck, we're the region that invented Gore-Tex, so we dress for the weather instead of trying to fight it. And, we do buy sunglasses, just the cheap ones. We use 'em for one season, loose them or sit on them, and then pick up another new pair next
season. Repeat this sequence every year.
I do not own an umbrella. I have learned [trial and error] to layer layer layer. And I would definitely buy sunglasses, but I always lose them. But I would. Just know that I would if I had a better memory.
