The Cilium in your respiratory system will remove anything that isn't supposed to be there with the help of it's friend mucus. Best thing you can do is take an anti-inflamitory medication like an antihistamine or Ibuprofin depending on your personal restrictions (IE some antihistamine can cause drowsyness, some people are sensitive to ibuprofin. I would encourage you to go to your pharmacist for a recommendation) to help with the swelling and irritation of your body trying to possibly remove anything that isn't supposed to be there. It will also help your body to calm down a little because of a possible over-reaction of histamine in the body.

If you have congestion of the lungs or lower respiratory tract *not your nose and throat* AND the cough is non-productive *there is stuff in your lungs that will not come up* you may also try something like Mucinex.

Most cough drops and throat sprays just numb so that will relieve the irritation but not completely help fix the actual problem. Some tea and honey/cough drops will help you feel better and soothe the coughing that will only aggravate the problem.

Go talk to your pharmacist!
