I am sick AGAIN. I'm not having a great couple of weeks at the moment. How is it possible to get a cold in such heat....why is it called a COLD...because you get it when it's winter and it's freezing. You can see I am not being very good at being sick. I want to be under my duvet on my sofa watching shit TV being waited on by my big man. But no, just me and the bugs.
Due to illness my day has been pretty useless. I finished off my announcements and even started sticking them onto the reading cards - all ready for Saturday's big event. And then I kind of went downhill from there. My motivation was at an all time low. But I persevered and took sometime to properly read the HorizonLanka website - just because we shall be redesigning it in the coming weeks. If you haven't looked already, go to www.horizonlanka.org - it's a hoot. Now I don't mean that in a nasty way..I have already pointed out to Wanni that I did find the website a tad over sugared and terribley sentimental. But I didn't expect to find blatant rasicm....OUCH! Now, in Wanni's defence, he didn't know what he was writing may cause offence to 1.26 billion people. The article on his website was titled "The Land of the Squarefaced People"...I had to do a double take when I read it. I couldn't believe my eyes. Now as Rosie quite rightly pointed out, I was never the most PC person out there....but even I was a little astounded. I did have a quiet word in Wanni's email box and he has agreed that maybe we should change the article...though I know for a fact he didn't mean any offence. Perhaps that shows the true naivety of the villagers of Mahavilachchiya. He was only saying what he saw (A definate Catchphrase moment there) and really whats wrong with that? Some people are black and some yellow. Some are really ugly and others have hallitosis. But does this mean that we shouldn't mention it because it's rude? Good question!!!
Political Correctness is sadly making our lives incredibley restricted. Children are the only ones out there who still are able to say what they see without being frowned upon for being unPC. Hey ho.
Had an interesting talk with Wanni today. Why is it that when Sri Lankans leave these beautiful shores in search of freedom and money, and incorporate themselves into the western lifestyle, they try and stop those stil living in Sri Lanka from experiencing anything outside this culture? It has come to my attention that these Sri Lankans are suffering from a case of serious double standards. One for them and another for the ones they left behind. It's namely the Australian Donors who are giving us grief. This discussion started when Wanni mentioned that 'some sponsors' were concerned about the children having access to the internet in their homes when MESH is implemented in the village. They are worried that those few depraved types who surf the internet in search of young victims will "seduce" the young children of this village. When I began to dig deeper, it turns out that these so called ex-patriots don't like associating with anyone who is not Buddhist and not Sinhalese. So if they knew I was a Tamil, Indian, Catholic, Divorced woman, do you think they'd be impressed? Apparently they aren't too happy with a man called Harin who is helping us because he is catholic. Atleast he is helping us sorting out all our accounts. They would rather sit in their air conditioned houses by the beach and preach to us the values of keeping our culture alive and won't get off their BBQ'd ladened fat arses to actually do anything. It gets me so angry that we are held at gun point by these bastards....we are so reliant on their donations, Wanni can't afford to piss them off even if he doesn't agree with their moralistic views. No wonder trying to find peace in this country is impossible. If those that left are still keeping these barriers up, how can we expect those that are remaining to put aside their differences. My mother often used the word "cussard" when we were children referring to people who didn't look any further than the end of their noses. Now, for years my siblings and I have never been able to find out if this was a real word. Well today I did. Her typical Sri Lankan stylie pronunciation is what has made it unfindable. She was actually trying to say "cussed", which also means obstinate!!!! I knew I'd have some revelations here but finding out what my mother was harping on about after 22 years is quite something. So back to the ex-pats....they are definately cussed bastards. Excuse my french!
The girls stayed over here last night working on the websites till 3am this morning. I sauntered off to bed by 12am...I'm old damn it! So naturally, all of them were exhausted this morning. After lunch, which sadly they didn't get because they forgot to tell Geevani that they had no lunch so could she make them some, so they had to suffice on biscuits and cakes, they all opted for a small nap on the floor of the computer lab (that's where they slept last night). Whilst they slept I read about Squarefaced people and man, this room sure heats up at the peak of the day. It was stiffling. When they woke, I asked them to keep the door open to let a little air in...but they seemed relucatant to do so...are they MAD?? They seem to have an allergy to fresh air preferring the stale stagnant air of the computer lab. Children are strange sometimes. They then piped up that they wanted to play football. Wanni had already told them that because they hadn't had a proper lunch, we'd not play footie today. But whilst he was asleep in the house, they cornered me and asked to play. Fine I said though I was feeling pretty peaky. So we'd planned to leave at 3:30pm....and so I went off to don my sports trousers and trainers. In the meantime, Wanni had emerged from his pit so I said that the girls really wanted to play footie so we were off and was he joining us? No he wouldn't was the answer but off we should go. Anyways, i continued tying laces, when suddenly Iresha and Krishanthi turned up, looking a bit sheepish. They had decided to go home now. My first reaction was that Wanni had said something and though he swears he didn't, I get the feeling that maybe a few words were passed that though telling the girls to go play football, also gave them the guilt trip!!! Men can be sneaky! Sorry Wanni....I'm a suspicious old bitch!
My headache and stuffy nose were getting worse and with no football on the cards now, what could I do? I didn't want to sit in the computer lab so came up with an ingenious idea. A PACK OF CARDS!! Off we went to the local boutique and for Rs 55 purchased a pack. We then spent the rest of the afternoon under the mango tree playing Pontoon and Trumps! I've been trying to cheer myself up with a million games of Solitaire. The computer version is alot easier. Less stretching and bending.
And thats the day done! Off to blow my nose.
Big kiss
