OOC Information:

AIM: iisheep
E-MAIL: rschwarz@gm.slc.edu

IC Information:
Name: Remus Lupin
Fandom: Harry Potter
Timeline: Circa 1973, when Remus is in his Third year at school.
Age: 13
Appearance: Pale, thin and of average height. He has brown hair and brown eyes with dark circles under them, and it is assumed that he has a large scar somewhere on his body from a werewolf bite.

Abilities: Remus is a wizard. This means that he can cast spells using a wand. However, he is only in his third year of magical schooling; he has not mastered many practical spells yet. (He is particularly awful at brewing potions.) He is also a werewolf, meaning that at the rise of every full moon he turns into a large wolf. At these times he has no control over his wolfish urges, namely to bite humans, eat animals, and destroy anything that gets in his way.

Personality: Remus is very shy and cautious around people that he does not know, but people who manage to break through his protective shell will find in him a loyal friend. He is very smart and studious, but is also a trouble maker at heart. It is not hard to convince him to play practical jokes on people in spite of his inner voice of reason. However, even among friends he is a private person: he gets very uncomfortable when talking about emotional matters.

History: Remus was born on 10 March, 1960. He is a half-blood wizard, which means that one of his parents is Muggle (non-magical person) or Muggle-born (a wizard whose family is all Muggle). I believe that Remus's mother is a Muggle while his father is a wizard.

Although his parents loved him very much, Remus's childhood was marred by pain and sorrow. When he was only a little child he was bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. (Though Remus does not know it at the point from which I am taking him in canon, Greyback's attack was an act of revenge against Remus's father, who had insulted him inadvertently.) From that point on, Remus was a werewolf himself. There is no cure for lycanthropy (wereolfism); nor, at this point, was there any way to dampen its effects. Every month he was subject to painful transformations into a hyper-aggressive wolf, which, separated from human prey, would turn on itself. His parents had to do their best to mend the wounds the following day.

Remus was also very lonely as a human child. Most wizards mistrust and fear werewolves; thus Remus's parents were determined to keep other wizarding families from knowing of their child's condition. Remus was isolated from other children for his own safety, left to make up his own lonely games in the Lupin family's small home. His parents also assumed that he would not be allowed to attend Hogwarts, the premiere British school for witchcraft and wizardry, despite his natural magical abilities. It was a huge surprise when Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts's headmaster, informed the Lupins that Remus would be taken as a student as long as precautions were taken.

So it was that when Remus was eleven years old, he left home for Hogwarts. There he was sorted into Gryffindor, the Hogwarts House known for its courageous students. He was joined as a First-Year Gryffindor by James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. They became Remus's first friends. Though he tried to hide his lycanthropy from them for fear that they would hate him, they eventually figured it out. To his astonishment, they did not hate him: they accepted him and tried to help him. The boys are now in their Third year at Hogwarts; Remus is unaware that his friends are currently cooking up a scheme to keep him company during his transformations.

Roleplay Sample - Log: Remus had been up since dawn that day. This was uncommon; during the summer months he rarely woke before ten unless he had to. But today was no longer the summer; it was September first. The start of a new term at Hogwarts. He was so excited that it felt like a stomachache: he would be going back to Hogwarts today!

"Remus, are you awake yet?" yawned his mother, still rubbing her eyes as she toddled into his bedroom.

"Yes, Mum," he replied, jumping up. He was also already dressed in his Muggle jeans and sweater, fully-packed. Together they walked into the kitchen.

It wasn't that he disliked being at home. The Lupins' cottage, on the opposite side of the Scottish highlands from school, was warm and rainy and quiet all summer. Far from the constant noise and excitement of Gryffindor Tower, it was a nice place to unwind and be alone. He liked living with his parents again too; there was nothing like the wafting smell of his father's herbal teas or the staticky sound of his mother's television as she watched the news in the evenings. Even more than Hogwarts, it felt comfortable, undemanding, like home.

"Morning," his father said, striding into the kitchen, dressed but still with his brown hair in a mess sticking up from his head. By now three large plates of scrambled eggs were steaming on the table.

The only problem with home was that it was lonely. There was no human habitation other than the Lupins' house for miles. There had once been a small wizarding town here, but all of the other families had left when Remus was small. Something about howling in the night. This was not a bad situation. He liked being alone, usually; he loved sitting outside in his mother's garden and reading or exploring the foggy hills and forests and marshes with nothing but the cicadas and frogs for company. But there was a limit to what he could do alone. And now that he had gotten a taste of what it was like not to be alone...

Remus was just sitting down to his scrambled eggs when he noticed his father staring oddly under the table at his left foot. He rolled his eyes.

"Dad, just leave it. It's already scarred over, anyway."

His father shook his head. "Can I look at it again?"

With a sigh Remus straightened his leg and held his bare foot out. A long, deep scar ripped his flesh from between two of his toes all the way up his foot. It had gone red now, healed over, but it was still so wide that the tough scar tissue separated the toes crookedly from one another. His father prodded it with his wand; Remus flinched.

"Dad."

His father shook his head again. "I just don't see how you did it."

"I told you, I bit through, and then my fangs slipped."

"Boys," said his mother softly. She hated hearing werewolf talk on normal days of the month. "John, leave him alone and eat."

After a suitably-paced meal Mr Lupin levitated Remus's heavy trunk over to the fireplace in the kitchen. It was lucky that they all lived on one floor in the house; it would have been difficult to maneuver the trunk down the narrow steps to the cellar.

Remus said goodbye to his mother in the kitchen; she did not much like Apparating. Remus wanted to make it a quick goodbye, and had to force himself out of his mother's arms. Then he took his father's arm and the two disappeared from the house. After a moment they found themselves in the special Muggle-free Apparation point at King's Cross Station. Through the wall onto Platform Nine and Three Quarters, and suddenly it was the moment that Remus had been waiting for.

"Remus!"

He turned to the voice. It was James Potter, pelting toward him as if on wings, black hair sticking straight up from his head. He engulfed Remus in a crushing hug, yelling, "How've you been, it's been ages' as if he meant to ask the entire platform. Then out of the crowd came a high pitched squeal and Peter Pettigrew ran headlong into them. A whoop of "James, Remus, you idiots, where've you got to?" And Sirius Black dove onto their little knot. Wrapped in a sea of arms and yelling voices, Remus felt he had had quite enough of quiet for a little while. It was better to have friends.

Roleplay Sample - Journal: Madame Pomfrey gave me this journal for my birthday yesterday. She told me to write and 'express my feelings' in it every day. I feel a bit like a girl for writing in a journal like this. But I know that Madame Pomfrey will ask me whether I have been writing next time I see her, and I would feel quite terrible lying to her about it. So I suppose I should write in this journal every so often until she stops asking.

What else is there to say? I turned thirteen yesterday; I suppose I am a real teenager now. James will turn thirteen in a couple of weeks, and Sirius and Peter have already turned thirteen. Mum would say that we're 'growing up', but I do not feel any different than I did when I was twelve.

I've got my Ancient Runes class later today. We are supposed to be learning the basic properties of Ehwaz. The others don't take Ancient Runes, they take Care of Magical Creatures instead. I really wanted to take the class with them, but I can't because most magical creatures get very agitated around me at certain times. I'm not upset about it though, because I quite like Ancient Runes. I am worried about Potions class after that, though - I can't make a Shrinking Potion to save my life. Actually, I can't make any potion without botching it. I just don't understand the theory. And I'll probably be paired with one of the Slytherins again because the others will be late to class. Perhaps I should just wait for them to arrive outside the classroom? At least Peter and Sirius and James won't laugh at me when I ruin the potion.

Anyway, I think that should be all for today. I would like to get some lunch now.
