This isn't official in that it came from a press release, however recent Japanese gaming magazine scans seem the reveal that even though Dragon Quest 9 has optional multiplayer options, the battles are still turn based and resemble the battle system previously seen in the series

Yes it does. Now, granted, the visual image I had for this game before, well it still would've been good. However, it was almost Dragon Quest Online, and probably wouldn't have deserved to be a numbered Dragon Quest.

Yeah, I've heard that comparison a few times.

On a related note, I distinctly remember seeing Action-RPG game play in the first trailer, but the new screen shots distinctly show, um, turn based game play.

I'm thinking Turn based game play won out, but it's kind of odd for a developer to dramatically shift gears in mid development. I wonder if this is going to result in a delay.
