Water in the carburettor.
Some clever person had cable-tied the overflow pipe from the fuel tank shut, so that whenever any water got in while the filler cap was open, it just collected and collected and collected until eventually it sounds like most of the reserve was taken up with water. Apparently the mechanics had to drain off near a gallon of shit before they got pure petrol again.
