Music Rant

Ok, here's goes one of my favorite rants and since I'm bored I think I'll try to talk about it on here and hopefully I'll get plenty of comments. Since coming to FU, I've met so many wonderful people many of them being in a group I like to call musical elitists. Most vary in how extreme they are with their elitism but most still hold that if a style of music does not match their own then it is shit. Now I would like to rebuke this idea with a question and then I'll give my answer to that question. The question is what is modern music designed to do. My answer would be that for the most part it is meant to entertain. Occasionally some kind of generic pop song will be made to generate money for a charity or something like that but for the most part part people buy an album because they enjoy what they are listening to. Now most musical elitists target the kind of groups that pull in crowds of thousands to stadiums by making generic pop, country or rap songs. Now I would say that what these people are doing is what music should do. Obviously if these people are quite willing to pay $50-$100 a show they are obviously being entertained by something. Therefore, while I may not enjoy a group I may still respect them for putting in the hours to record an album and go on tour with music that a large percentage of the general populace enjoys. I'm going to try and make an analogy here and we'll see if it works for ya. Would you call a chef a "sell-out" just because he made food that most of the people coming into his restaurant enjoyed. Of course not, you would call him a smart and successful business man. The same principal applies to bands. Bands get paid to make music that people enjoy. Everyone cannot always do the "new" thing. Anyway, that's my rant. I'm sure I'll get comments.
