Office 14 [Thursday afternoon]

He'd thought he might just do it tomorrow, but then he'd have to actually show up on a Friday. Not something he was all that excited to do. So he'd just wandered over to his office after class ( Read more... )

Sophie came by a bit later, leaning against the doorway. "Happy it's over?"

Max chuckled, as much because the company was excellent as anything else, really. "Oh, they were decent kids, but... yeah. It's nice to be done with it. Though now I have to figure out what to do with my time."

"Not going to teach another class then?" Sophie settled herself in the visitor's chair like a cat, watching him. "Or do you just mean for the next week, before the next crop of utterly ignorant young students and teachers arrives?"

"Just the next week," Max sighed theatrically. No one was ever going to accuse him of being a good actor. "If I didn't teach I'd probably have to find a real job."

Sophie laughed, tilting her head. "I'd offer you a job so you'd avoid your awful fate, but somehow I don't think you'd love selling art work to tourists. What are you teaching this fall instead?"

"Infantry tactics," he answered with a shrug. "I figure I should keep sticking with what I know." Then he smirked. "And I don't know... how many of your tourists are cute?"

"A certain percentage," Sophie said demurely, shaking her head. "Ah! That reminds me." She gave him mock-hopeful-sorrowful-woe-is-me eyes. "Would you be an utter pal this weekend, and assist me in moving into my new digs?"

"You're moving?" Max asked. "But I liked your old place." And how will he do a walk of shame past Rachel now?

"But seeing as I have all this free time on my hands, and can't think of better company to spend it with... my answer's going to be yes."

"We'll have to have a going-away party then. Privately," Sophie said, stretching out her legs and answering both questions at once! Score!

"Thank you, Max. I truly appreciate it. I don't have that many things," if you didn't count the frightening number of shoes, "but the lack of motorized transport on the Island does make moving awkward."

Max leaned forward. He wasn't the sort to let a view like that go unappreciated. In fact he figured it was probably criminal to do so.

"Think nothing of it," he waved vaguely. "Like I said, it's not like I'm doing anything else. And I can think of much less interesting ways to spend my weekend." With all that implied.

"Excellent," Sophie purred. "Why don't you come by early on Friday night? You can help me with... packing. Bedsheets, and so on." She smiled. "I'll throw in dinner, as well."

"What kind of cad would I have to be to refuse a generous invitation like that?" What? Max was just fine with being predictable, thank you very much.

"An unreliable cad who doesn't like pizza. Or myself." Sophie smirked. "I'm so glad you're neither. And of course, I'll owe you any help I can in the future."

Turnabout was fair, wasn't it?

"I'll definitely have to remember that," Max smirked. He was the sort of man who called in his debts...

When they were the kind that could be called in for an enjoyable evening with a beautiful woman.
