Japan \o/

I keep wondering what I should post about on here but it's like, wow, I haven't made a real post in an age and a half. There have been pretty huge changes in my life since I last properly updated but I don't really want to talk about those (not for any sad/bad reasons, I just don't wanna :Dv). Many things are still the same though -- I continue to ( Read more... )

It really is addictive! And there's never time to see enough in 2-3 weeks, but that's all the vacation time I can get at one time, alas. YEAH I super lucked out last year! I booked the trip hoping that I would at least catch SOME of the blossoms but it turned out to be totally perfect timing, yay \o/

The panda was very cute eating bamboo and completely ignoring the constant procession past the enclosure. I loved the otters and bears, too.

This time I am spending almost a full week in Kyushu -- Fukuoka and Kitakyushu are on the list, as well as anything else that catches my eye while I am there. Then I'm meeting up with a friend and going to visit Okunoshima (the bunny island near Hiroshima), then spending a day in Okayama and another in Kobe, then Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, and then 4 days in the Tokyo area catching up on things I kept missing out on during previous trips, like the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum and some more in-depth wandering around Ikebukuro. ^^

I went to Lumos 2006 which was also in Vegas and it was one of the best con experiences ever and while I'm sure nothing will ever compare with Lumos, a Vegas resort vacation in summer just can't be beat. ^^;

You'll be a Japan expert, seeing more things than most of the Japanese people. XD

I'll be interested in your opinion of the Universal Studios in Osaka - if it is fun, I'll try to squeeze it in myself. Is the SnK theme park there?
Bunnieeeees! <333 That place must be a paradise.
A Japanese friend of mine is living in Fukuyama so I will add that area next time. I plan to visit the place of Ponyo which are in that area. But one thing is for sure: will go back to Iwami. There is something special in that place and it keeps pulling me back. Oh, and Iwaiya - the ryokan was superb there, so I must re-visit that too.
In Tokyo are you planning to go to anime themed cafés, too? And maybe a doujinshi event? Have you been to one of those?

I am sure you will have a great time - enjoy it to the fullest! :3

ah sorry I totally forgot to respond to this!

I doubt I'll ever have the cultural grounding necessary to be any kind of expert on Japan, haha XD

The SnK isn't a theme park per se -- it's a limited time attraction that started this January and is ending literally the day after we go there! My main interest is the SnK attraction but I'll see what else I can see -- the friends I'm going with are interested in the HP world too, so I'm guessing we'll find our way over there at some point. XD

I agree that Iwami is a really special place. I want to try going there during the evening when the restaurants and shops are actually open! ^^

I'm only planning to go to the limited-time Gintama shops as far as specific events go but I'm going to spend a lot of time in various Animates and Mandarakes :Dv I don't really go for doujinshi events, no -- I find it really stressful to even browse vendor rooms at cons with people pushing each other out of the way to get at the goods they want to see, and from what I understand dj events are an extreme version of that kind of thing, so it's really not up my street.

No worries! You've been busy with updating one of my all-time fav crossover fic, so everything is forgiven. XD XD

So it will not be there next year?!? Shoot... I wanted to go. :( But indeed you had perfect timing for this then. XD

I was afraid of dj events but it was not that bad. It was not as crowded as I expected (was a Splash Free! event combined with 3 other anime: Basara, Daiya no Ace and can't remember the third). Of course, many things were sold out buy the time we got there, but in exchange, I could actually get autograph from Kyuugou (who is a gorgeous looking, lovely lady *.*). So if not now, but next time you could consider going to a smaller (not talking about Comiket here), theme-specific event.

Night time Iwami! What a brilliant idea! Must be even more magical. I can imagine all the stars with the lack of urban city lights. *.*

Aww, thank you! Now i'm busy finishing it before I leave for Japan! XD

Well I don't know -- maybe they will open it again? It seems like a waste to only do it for 6 months and then dismantle the whole thing, especially since SnK continues to be crazy popular all over the world.

My first exposure to dj events was actually summer Comiket so I may have just walked away with a really negative impression. ^^; But to be honest I'm not... really a huge fan of the 'pay people for fan-created writing' thing; if I want a story about my favourite characters I can just write one myself or read one for free on AO3, even though it won't have art to go with it. ^^; I love buying things like artwork prints and fanart calendars, coasters, other goods, because I can't make visual art myself, but most doujinshi are story-driven AND full of the kinds of things I really dislike: rape, heteronormativity, seme/uke dynamics. So basically I'm just really not the type of person who seeks out doujinshi, and I would only really attend a dj event for the other, non-dj goods. Either way it will just never be a priority for me when visiting Japan.

It's probably just like the anime, remember when they were standing and looking up at the sky in s1!!! Ahhh just imagine the Uradome coast at night!! I bet it's gorgeous. *_*

Look what I found on tumblr! You'll there exactly during the exhibition. Maybe a little stop in Kyoto - it's so near to Osaka... ;)

You are SO DAMN LUCKY yet again. :P Please promise me you'll go and take pictures and enjoy it in my stead, too. >_<

Hmm this looks cool but also like the sort of thing I'd have to get advance tickets for though! They're starting advance sales tomorrow which means that there's probably NO WAY you can just show up at the venue and buy a ticket onsite (the site even says that if the day's admissions sell out in presale, there'll be no onsite tickets sold that day).

I'm nowhere near Kyoto on this trip except the day on & before we go to USJ, and we have other plans! I'd have to a) get a friend to get me a ticket in advance and b) give up a day in Kyushu to go to Kyoto for this. It's tempting, but I'm not sure I want to go to all that trouble; having to spend 6 hours on trains isn't really my idea of fun, not even for KnB. ^^;

Oh I see - definitely would take too much energy and time and money to arrange. There will be tons of Kurobasu staff basically anywhere since it's being aired at the moment.

I always forget about this advanced ticket system... That's why we could not go to the Kuroshitsuji exhibition. And had to actually play a lottery game to be able to spend 2 hours (and lots of money) in the Taibani Characro Café (I was lucky, actually did win out of the 2 tries).

i'm not giving up completely yet -- i asked my friend to see if the tickets aren't time-sensitive and if she can get us in on one of the days we're in the Osaka area. so it's a possibility but i'm not setting my heart on it. ^^
