I've read that stuff on Tumblr and Twitter, but I'm treating those reports as rumours until there's something more substantiated. I mean, in a few IRC channels I lurk around in, there have been reports of alien technology being deployed, hardcore conspiracy-theory stuff. And some people believe it! Though I think even if all of that is false, genocide is certainly being committed against the Libyan people. It doesn't matter what kinds of weapons are being used to perpetrate it.
There are several Twitter accounts claiming to be Libyans updating from Libya, but Libya's still cut off at the source, so I don't see how they're getting through when no one else can. I want to think they're legit because the alternative makes me too angry, but I also know that little is sacred to people who just crave attention at any cost, so I wouldn't be surprised if some or even all of those Libyans are actually Western teenagers having a great time whipping people into a frenzy.
Plus, some of the twitter posts circulating are images that could easily be falsified in Photoshop; I've tried following a few back to the original Twitter accounts they claimed to be from and couldn't find the postings - that might mean they've since been deleted for some reason or that they never existed. It's times like this -- when people are already inclined to be outraged and angry and thus less likely to follow-up on sources -- that trolls come out in full force, so I am being very careful about fact-checking.
