разрушенный мир, разбитые лбы, разломанный надвое хлеб

So here's how it's gonna be. The fannish contents of this journal are staying on LJ. Fic, squee, rants, meta, recs, con reports -- all of it, for all of my fandoms. Everything else (general topics like writing, politics, driving, etc) is going to DW, and I will post a link here whenever I make a DW post. No, I don't want to hear "but DW is nicer to fandom than LJ!" It almost certainly will be, but here's the thing: I don't want to move all my fannish content over to DW, and I would need to, in order to consider it a proper fannish journal. The reason I don't want to move the content is not that it's difficult -- it isn't; DW makes it ridiculously easy to import entries, comments, tags, you name it.

The problem is that in so many of my past fandom entries, the comment discussions often have far more value than the posts themselves, and moving just the posts would be largely pointless. However, I have a serious issue with moving comments that other people made. Those comments are theirs -- just because they're in my journal doesn't mean I own them or can republish them on another site at will, even with the original contributor's OpenID attached. When people commented here, they were doing it with full knowledge of where they were commenting (livejournal.com). I can't know whether or not they'll be okay with their thoughts and words showing up on dreamwidth.org. I'm sure that for the vast majority of people, this isn't a big deal either way -- as far as I can tell, OpenID allows past LJ commenters full control over stuff moved to DW, but for me this is not enough. It's a facet of online privacy: having the ability to choose where content you generated resides before it shows up there. I take this kind of thing seriously, and thus I feel an obligation to ask individual permission before I republish anything that belongs to someone else, OpenID or no. And there's absolutely no way I'll ever be able to hunt down everyone who has ever commented here.

Preemptively, considering all the DW-related brouhaha of late, where it's enough that a person says "Oh, hey, a thing!" for everyone to jump on her for forcing "thing" on everyone? This is about me, my online philosophy, and my approach to text ownership. It's not about anyone else's choices, so please spare me the justifications for why you feel it's okay to move others' comments -- I don't care! I'm not saying this is not okay; I'm saying I don't feel it's okay for me to do it, for the reason I've explained above. What you do, however, is none of my business, and your opinion on the subject is just as valid as mine.

Also, for whatever it's worth, everyone hereby has my permission to import to DW any and all comments I've made in your LJ or IJ. And no, that's not a passive-aggressive way of saying "you should have asked first, but fine, you can have my permission anyway" -- I simply realise that some of you, after reading this post, would reasonably assume I expect you to ask my permission. No, I don't expect it and never did. I just want to pre-empt any "well, I imported all comments, and some of them were yours; I don't agree with your philosophy/haven't thought about it that way, so don't be angry with me for not asking!" I'm not angry with anyone for not asking, because I only expect myself to ask. A tendency to demand that other people conform to my unique special snowflake standards is not one of my vices, yet. Check back when I'm sixty.
