Once Again
There is so much more that I want to say
As the embers fade to ash, as the silence
Fades to grayer noise.
I want to make amends,
But I do not know how many friendships
I have torched in my quest for
Something I call in earnest light
But I earnestly desire
To make an end of pride
Earnestly desire
To shine a light about
The darkened places of my mind
Clear away the cobwebs
Kiss you on the forehead,
Learn your name,
Share your joy,
Share your dread,
Grow old, as Eliot once exclaimed
Suck peppermints through dentures
Smell of mothballed sweaters
Walk along the beach
Hear your old voice singing
Just for me
But these embers fade to ash
And the silence fades
To a grayer more hateful noise
And there is still
So much more to say.
