Observing the Increasing Trend

Am I the only person who really hate it when people use fanart for icons without crediting, and then ask people who use the icons to credit them? Personally, I don't use fanart for icons, unless I draw it myself or get permission from the fanartist, but I can tolerate at least if people credit properly.

actually not too tl;dr )

Using fanart icons is a huge pet peeve of mine. I was horrified to see how prevalent it was in some fandoms, to the point I gave up asking icon makers where they got/stole the art from.

I make it a point never to use the icons from someone who makes fanart icons wholesale, even if those icons are from official art.

It's just not that bad years ago, when it's still a bit of a taboo. Or maybe it's because 4chan/DA/booru-type sites hadn't been too mainstream, so people had to actually go out and seek fanartists' site to see fanart, making web rings with fellow fanartists etc.

Even when I ask the credit for some pics, sometimes people would just answer "pixiv" without linking to the specific artist's page (not knowing Japanese is no excuse) or worse, "4chan", which is as good as not crediting, except in rare occurences where the fanartist doesn't release their picture except there and without a tripcode.

Mh, it should be good to always give credits to who deserves it, even though, I just don't get the whole jelousy about icons. I do some icons from time to time and share them but I just can bring myself to care about it. Otherwise, if I use an icon from someone, I do credit them with the hope that they would credit the artist they get pics from, but i must admit I rarely double check it..

The one in this post is the only icon I use that I do not know who to credit for, shame on me, but I'll be glad if someone'd tell ^^;;

Some people think as long as it's on the interwebs, it's up for grabs. Simple as that.

I used to make fanart icons about a hundred years ago, when I was still new to all this iconing business, but gave up after a few posts when I realised I was making more 100x100 squares out of fanart than official art. It just..felt strange, as if I (or the people taking the icons) weren't pleased with the original product and wanted to replace it with something that suits us (just look at the way BL fanart icons prevail). I know it's nice to wish for alternate things, but, in the end, that picture belongs to the artist.

Not to mention that I get pretty annoyed when I see icon makers building a reputation exclusively on fanart icons.
