Hi, um, I was just reading through the cslounge archives for a post I remembered, and I found the post to which you commented and said you were coming to CMU. Thinking, "oh, hey, let's see what he's like," I clicked your link and read a little about you.
That said, it seems that about a month ago you were sad about your choice of CMU, and I'd like to cheer you up a bit. First of all, don't worry about the girl situation. There are actually plenty of great girls, smart and funny and, yes, even pretty, if you open your eyes. They're unequally distributed across departments, so if you're in math or engineering you may have to consider walking around in fine arts. Even if you don't like the "CMU girl," there are several other universities within walking distance with a wide range of suitable females.
Second, about the dorms (I suppose you're in Hamerschlag or Donner?), if you're doing it right, you don't spend much time in your dorm. A lot of people study in common areas, or someone else's room, and if you're in a department that has labs, studios, practice rooms, or computer clusters, you'll be spending your schoolwork time there. Dorms are really just for crashing at the end of the day.
I hope I'm not coming across as super creepy for posting this. I've never been the bubbly, overenthusiastic cheerleader type (I never went to spirit rallies when we had them in high school), but I really do think this is an excellent place, with something for everyone, if you go about it correctly. This is, of course, the point at which I pimp the KGB, but honestly, even if you never associate with us, I hope you are happy at CMU.
no, don't worry, it's not creepy at all...trust me, i'm one of those crazy facebook-adding people, so most people think i'm creepy.
yeah, i'm not hugely worried about the girls anymore. i mean, yeah, i'll whine about it, but if i DO end up not liking any of them, i still have pitt and dunesque (or however you spell it.)
yeah, i'm in donner. i dunno, i'm a dorm person, but at the same time, donner doesn't seem SO bad. i just found out (like, a minute ago) that one of my friends is in fairfax. bastard.
anyways, thanks for the info. actually, right now, i'm really happy with cmu, and i really wouldn't trade it for any other college because the people there seem really cool.
