Everyone one else was late, or wasn't going to show up at all. I felt nervous, going to drinks with only her. It was a feeling that folks in long term relationships don't get to feel that often. We talked about pop music and the fact that she doesn't speak french despite growing up minutes from Montreal.
Our friends drifted in and had a few drinks; it felt like we were just waiting for them to leave. I paid. Someone asked if we were together, and we were both quick to answer in the negative. After our friends left, we went to another bar and played darts while trying to drink our pints in the fifteen minutes before the barkeep sent everyone out into the heavy, wet snow.
While I thought of what it would be like to kiss her, my girlfriend texted me and told me she wanted me to come home soon because she was lonely.
Tonight, two days later, I could have asked her for a rematch at darts, but instead let her walk out of our mutual workplace without saying goodbye.
