Turkey's Denial

Oct 10, 2007 12:47

Turkey's president has warned that relations with the United States could be harmed if US politicians pass a resolution declaring the killing of hundreds of thousands of Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century an act of genocide.

The US House of Representatives' foreign affairs committee is set to vote on the measure on Wednesday.

If the resolution, which is opposed by the Bush administration, is passed it will be considered by the full House of Representatives.

from here.

I wonder who's on the foreign affairs committee. I've never called anyone in politics before, but I'm getting tired of our government giving in to Turkish revisionary history. It wasn't a civil war. If massacreing over a million Armenians, including elderly women and infants, in a systemic fashion can't be called genocide, then what exactly does that term describe? I'm sorry, but this is just ridiculous. It's been almost a century since the Armenian genocide happened. It's time for Turkey to accept that it happened. I won't speak for every Armenian, but all I personally want from Turkey is an acknowledgment that it happened. They don't even have to apologize.

But I bet this won't pass, because of what's been going with Iraq. I bet our congressmen are going to give into Turkish demands once again.

Anyone want to bet they'll do the right thing?

[EDIT: Here's the list of Foreign Affairs Committee members. Please consider contacting your congressman if he or she is on that committee.]
