The Outsiders is my favorite book, ever. I re-read it every year, and it never gets old to me - The characters are great, the way S.E. Hinton writes everything in detail, and so perfectly from a teenagers point of view. The original movie came out in 1983, and featured many up and coming stars (Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, and even Tom Cruise...) So when
picspammy had a casting challenge going on, I figured it was time to stop lurking the place and actually fill a challenge!
My version of The Outsiders obviously has actors from all age ranges, so let's just say they would all be the right age for their characters, haha. Let's begin!
anton yelchin as ponyboy curtis.
(Originally played by: C. Thomas Howell.)
It was a hard choice for Ponyboy - I had it down to Anton and Logan Lerman in the end (who you'll see in just a minute...), but I think Anton could do a great job as Ponyboy. If you've seen him in Charlie Bartlett or Fierce People, you know he can pull off being the narative central character.
Where you've seen him: Star Trek, Charlie Bartlett, New York: I Love You.
logan lerman as sodapop curtis.
(Originally played by: Rob Lowe.)
And here's where I put Logan! He's a bit too young at the moment to play Soda, but I thought the resemblance/overall good looks overwon the age difference. Honestly, I've never seen him in anything yet, but I'm sure he could pull off loveable, carefree Soda.
Where you've seen him: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
christian bale as darrel curtis.
(Originally played by: Patrick Swayze.)
This is my selfish, probably doesn't make sense to most people choice. I love Christian Bale, I had to find a way to fit him in here. He could pull off the serious, caring brother that Darry is. Not to mention he already has the muscles...
Where you've seen him: The Dark Knight, American Psycho, Newsies.
robert downey jr. as dallas winston.
(Originally played by: Matt Dillon.)
RDJ was the first person to pop in my mind when I thought of who to play Dally. He's obviously an incredible actor, who has overcome so much shit to be who he is today. Dally is a hardened, tough criminal, and I think Rubber Ducky would kick ass at the part.
Where you've seen him: Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes, Tropic Thunder.
joseph gordon-levitt as johnny cade.
(Originally played by: Ralph Macchio.)
Oh, JGL. I had a hard time thinking of who to put in Johnny's shoes. (The other people I was thinking of were Gabriel Damon and Luke Pasqualino...) but something about JGL just hit me. He already played a Johnny-like role in Mysterious Skin, so I have no doubt in his acting abilities.
Where you've seen him: (500) Days of Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mysterious Skin.
heath ledger as two-bit matthews.
(Originally played by: Emilio Estevez.)
I almost didn't want to put both JGL and Heath in the same casting, because they look so similar, but Heath. What can I say about him? The man was an amazing actor, and I'm pretty sure everyone still misses him. I was considering him for Dallas for a few minutes, but that smile of his won me over to him playing Two-Bit. He can definitely play a trickster well, which is exactly what Two-Bit is.
Where you've seen him: The Dark Knight, 10 Things I Hate About You, Brokeback Mountain.
jack o'connell as steve randle.
(Originally played by: Tom Cruise.)
I had to fit someone in from Skins! Steve's role is so small, but Steve reminds me so much of Cook from Skins, that I just had to cast him in this. He'd rock it.
Where you've seen him:This is England, Skins.
So that's it! Comments/criticism/anything else are greatly appreciated. ♥
