Birthdays and baking

So the last baking I did in 2014 was this delicious fruit cake. It's a recipe I hadn't tried before, one that didn't require eggs and was really good. There's cinnamon and all-spice in it, which really brought a strong flavour to it. It's the first time I've cooked a fruit cake in years and I was thrilled that the dried fruit didn't all sink to the bottom of the tin. For next Christmas, I might try putting marzipan and icing on it in order to create a Christmas cake.

This past weekend has been all about family. It was my Mum-in-Law's 60th birthday so Anthony and I headed to Sailsbury on Saturday where we surprised his Mum with a meal at a great placed called Cafe Rouge. She was surprised to see a big table of family there to meet her and was very pleased. Anthony and I got her a card with a picture of a lady and a dog on it with the caption 'The more I know about men, the more I love my dog.' Very apt we felt :) I got to see with Anthony's cousin, her husband and their little girl, it was a lovely chance to chatter with them and find out how things were with them. I also to eat a delicious burger and chips.

Then it was off to sister-in-law Baby Mel's house where she had baked an amazing birthday cake - vanilla sponge with jam and cream filling and lovely white icing, all in the shape of a big 60 with pink sugar flowers to decorate:

I can tell you that it tasted as good as it looks :) Anthony and I stayed the night with Baby Mel - she and her boyfriend bought their first house last year and it has a lovely spare room in the attic, it even has an en-suite bathroom and the mattress was firm which is what I look for. I'm afraid I can't sleep lying on a marshmallow lol. Anthony always says that I'm very particular which I'm afraid sounds like I'm fussy :S We spent a lovely evening with his sister and her boyfriend, watching a couple of stand-up comedy DVDs - Sarah Millian's Homebird show and Adam Hills' Happyism one. Both were utterly excellent and I laughed a lot. This morning, Baby Mel cooked us up a lovely breakfast - egg and bacon roll, sooo good - while Anthony and I expounded about wrestling to Mel's boyfriend who was apparently interested, I hope so otherwise I fear we only bored him! It was a really full and social but enjoyable weekend. It's great to start the year off in such a lovely way, it's such a shame that now we have to go back to work for the first full week of work in a while :(
