So these past couple of nights the Hawaii Five-0/NCIS: Los Angeles crossover episodes aired that I've been really looking forward to since last year. It's a smart move on behalf of the producers to make it so - the shows have an almost identical tone and are on the same network so why not? They also made sure not to put both full teams in an episode together as everyone would likely only get a few lines each and it would get muddled, crowded, and wouldn't work, instead the two leads from each show crossed-over into the other one and that worked well. It also neatly tied into one of NCIS: LA's long-running plot threads which was clever and didn't make it a way-too-convienient 'hey we just happen to need your help/you happen to be in the area so why not?' episode.
There was a lot to love here. More mention of Sam and Steve's friendship - first established when Kensi appeared in Hawaii Five-0 - which I can totally believe. Danny's wonderful disbelief and teasing that Callen's family was involved in an actual blood-feud. Sam and Danny talking about naming Danny's car. Danny's reactions to Hetty. Danny and Deeks trying to out-banter each other and mocking each other's hair. Kensi and Chin's reactions to their partners bickering. Danny's epic man!pain every time Steve is mentioned - they're practically married, people, and it shows. Callen getting to kill the person who helped wipe out his family. So much goodness basically.
The real shame is that we didn't get to see Steve and Danny together interacting with Sam and Callen. Due to actor Alex O'Loughlin needing time off to deal with his painkiller addiction, he sadly wasn't present for the crossover episodes. I believe the crossover was intended as Sam and Callen being in a Hawaii episode and Steve and Danny being in a LA one. Instead we got Chin and Danny. Hopefully once Alex is back, we'll get Steve there someday. Would be awesome :)
