We did it today! Woooo.
After a lot of mess, we found the maximum fuel adjustment screw. Its behind that plastic plug, just as the guide said. However, what the guide didn't say was "there's a lot of diesel in the pump" so we got nicely soaked, and diesel went all over the engine! Which is, I suppose, why we covered the alternator. Besides, its cleaned all the oil off thoroughly, so the engine actually looks an awful lot cleaner. Which is more than I can say for the road outside my cousin's house...
We botched a two way screw head on the new plug by sticking some all purpose putty in it, then using a 13mm chisel I bought just for the occasion, I made a slot, and let it dry hard. Voila, a screw head that can be done up AND undone :) (the plugs, by the way, are designed with a one way screw head, so you can't undo them with a normal screwdriver, the slots are ramped in one direction).
The first time I THOUGHT I'd turned the adjustment, we plugged it up and went for a spin, but were unsure if it had done anything. So we drained more diesel onto the floor and tried again. This time we couldn't see the adjustment, so following the instructions we rocked the car, in gear, to make the pump assembly rotate. It didn't. So we scratched our heads, and took the handbrake off. And it started turning! Yay! We found the adjustment screw, and then I promptly dropped my allen key, and it became lodge in the engine bay. Its actually still in there, so I'm praying ti doesn't move into the cam belt and destroy my car after all this hard work. I'll have to get under and try to find it tomorrow.
We got some pliers, and forced the screw to turn (it was, as we'd read, very stiff indeed). We turned it something between 20 to 30 degrees (of the 40 maximum) and went for another test drive. It was definitely smoking more out the exhaust, and felt a little faster, so all seemed well.
Since then I've driven it about town a bit, and having had the chance to check it out, its definitely much much faster, especially off the line. So, so far so good. Now onto the air intake... thats the next job, once pay day comes around on... 16th July!
