Why the hell would you use plastic bits in a #$%^ing gearbox?
Apparently that's what's wrong with the 3. There are plastic pieces separating the synchros or something (I'll get a better look myself very soon as I leave work) and one of them failed, which in turn would not allow me to get into 2nd. Supposedly the gears are fine (just confirmed into a MMS the tech sent), it's just a plastic piece.
